Iran's Supreme Leader blames US, Israel for Syria civil war, warns against intervention
TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's Supreme Leader is blaming the U.S. and Israel for the bloody, 19-month civil war in Syria.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also warns Western powers not to intervene in the conflict.
In his message to Muslims performing the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, he charges that the civil war, which he characterized as "young Muslims killing each other," is a "crime initiated by the United States and the Zionist regime, Israel," punishing Syria for resisting Israeli occupation and supporting anti-Israel Palestinian and Lebanese groups.
Khamenei noted "serious dangers" of Western intervention in Syria and other Mideast nations. His statement was read Thursday on Iranian state TV.
Iran has been a close ally of Syria for decades. It has staunchly supported the regime of President Bashar Assad during the civil war.

4 Ways to Protect Yourself if Your Travel Provider ... - Peter Greenberg
This month, Club ABC Tours went out of business without any notice and with little support for customers ?even the ones out on the road. Peter reviews what has happened and what travelers can do to protect themselves.
For the past couple of weeks, I have been reading your questions about Club ABC Tours. After 45 years in operation, the New Jersey-based company, owned by Crown Travel Service of Bloomfield,?shut down abruptly on October 1. When it shut down a lot of people were out a lot of money. There were even travelers overseas who, ?midway during their trip, ?found their hotel and flight reservations canceled. The upset is so huge that the New Jersey attorney general has been asked to investigate ABC Tours. So far, 166 travelers filed complaints with the Division of Consumer Affairs
Go to Club ABC Tours? website and you?ll see only this notice:
After almost 45 years of business, it is with deep regret that we must announce that our company has ceased operations.?If you booked a tour and purchased travel insurance, you may contact your insurer to determine claim eligibility. If you paid by credit card, you may contact your credit card company to determine refund eligibility.?On the event that you have booked a cruise, we suggest that you contact your cruise line directly and inquire as to the status of your trip.
Not very comforting, is it? What happens if your travel provider suddenly goes under, without any warning? ?It all goes back to how you book your travel.
1. Always pay for your travel with a credit card.
I do not say this for the best interest of the credit card companies, but for your best interest. You might not realize that Federal Credit Law that gives you rights. As a consumer, you are protected when you pay for goods or a service with your credit card, especially when it comes to high-ticket items and travel.
Remember, there is one caveat about paying with a credit card. A lot of tour operators and travel providers, will try to insist you make a huge and substantial deposit on your trip more than 60 days out, but the law doesn?t protect you outside of 60 days.
Here?s how The Federal Credit Law works: if you buy anything, whether it?s a television set or a trip to Bermuda, and you don?t get the TV set, or it never gets delivered, or the TV set breaks, or the cruise never happens, then the law kicks in only within 60 days of intended use. Your credit card company becomes the creditor against the travel provider, and issues you a credit on your account.
2. Consider travel insurance, wisely
Right now there are a lot of angry, angry travelers out there, but something could have been done. In addition to paying with a credit card, when you have a relatively large investment in a travel product?whether it is a hotel, a resort, an airline ticket, or a cruise?you want to insure that investment with a bare minimum of trip cancellation or interruption insurance. The insurance premium might be 11 or 12 percent, but when it?s a high-ticket item you need some protection of your out-of-pocket costs. More comprehensive coverage will also include lost or delayed baggage coverage (save those receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses), 24/7 support and other protections, but the basic trip cancellation or interruption is
3. Do not purchase that insurance directly through your travel provider
Trip Mate, the travel insurance provider for ABC, has more than 200 travelers who claim to have paid for policies through Club ABC that were never purchased.??Contact providers directly, whether it?s Trip Mate,?Travel Guard and Allianz Travel Insurance (formerly Access America for independent insurance. Talk to an agent about all potential scenarios and get a side-by-side comparison of what the policies do?and don?t?include. Online brokers such as ?Insuremytrip and Squaremouth have good comparison charts.
4. Protect your payment
Many travel providers will want the entire payment 6 months in advance. It a recipe for disaster unless, a company can prove to you that they are putting that money into an independent, third-party, escrow account that cannot be released until the day the trip starts. And those accounts do exist because travel providers want their credibility protected just as much as you want your money protected. If they can?t promise that and prove it in writing, don?t you do it.
Club ABC Tours is a textbook case, reminding travelers what you need to do before you ever take a trip. You want to pay with a credit card within 60 days of your intended departure, purchase travel insurance from a third party, or make sure that your travel provider puts your money into a third-party, protected escrow account that can?t be touched until you actually leave the harbor, or get on the plane, or check into the hotel.

James Franco to Receive Special Cubovision Prize at Rome's CinemaXXI Sidebar
ROME ? The International Rome Film Festival announced the full lineup for its CinemaXXI sidebar Tuesday, highlighted by A Walk in the Park from ?No Wave? cult director Amos Poe, Michael Wahrmann?s Avanti Popolo, Peter Greenway?s Goltzius and the Pelican Company and Steekspel (Tricked) from Paul Verhoeven.
Newly installed artistic director Marco Mueller also announced that actor and director James Franco, who is connected to two films in the CinemaXXI lineup, will receive a special prize in Rome. And for the first time, organizers screened in public the short trailer that will precede the screenings of all the films in the festival?s official selection, feature an artistic old-style of a nude woman preparing to shoot an arrow.
VIDEO: James Franco's Duet With Smokey Robinson, 'Crime,' Gets a Sexy, Trippy Visual
CinemaXXI, the newest incarnation of the sidebar previously known as Extra, focuses on new trends in cinema. Mario Sesti, who directed Extra until last year, has stayed on as one of the programmers for CinemaXXI, making him one of the most high-profile holdovers from the pre-Mueller era at the seven-year-old festival.
With the collection of feature-length, short and medium films and documentaries announced, the only announcements yet to be made for the lineup of the Nov. 9-17 event are the two surprise productions that will screen in competition.
The five-person jury headed by Scottish artist and filmmaker Douglas Gordon will award three prizes: a Best Film honor and Jury Prize for feature-length productions, and a separate award for short- and medium-length films.
The lineup features an eclectic mix of productions, with several directed by multiple directors, including: opening film Centro Hist?rico (Historic Center), an homage to the Portuguese city of Guimar?es from Finland?s Aki Kaurism?ki, 103-year-old Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, and Cannes regulars Victor Erice and Pedro Costa; Mondo Invisivel (Invisible World) directed by a dozen directors including Wim Wenders, Marco Bechis and de Oliviera again; and Tar, directed by a dozen more directors working under the ?supervision? of Franco, who stars in the production along with Mila Kunis.
Franco, who also directed a one-minute short-short called Dreams that will screen in the sidebar, will be awarded the new Cubovision prize. His presence will add to the festival?s red-carpet star power, which has been criticized by the local media.
With the two CinemaXXI screenings, Franco is becoming a regular in Italy: he also starred in Harmony Korine?s crime comedy Spring Breakers and had a cameo role in Ariel Vromen?s thriller The Iceman, both of which were well received at the Venice Film Festival in September.
Other films worth keeping tabs on in the lineup include: Tanti Futuri Possibili Con Renato Nicolini (Many Possible Futures With Renato Nicolini) from Gianfranco Rosi; Gegenwart (Consequence) from Germany?s Thomas Heise (the film?stars F. Murray Abraham); Suspension of Disbelief from U.K. director Mike Figgis; and Jianshi Liu Baiyuan (Judge Archer) from Chinese director Xu Haofeng.
Poe?s A Walk in the Park, which calls itself ?a psychedelic journey back into the womb,? is the opening film of the main competition, in contrast to Centro Hist?rico, which is the CinemaXXI opening film and screening out of competition.
Most of the films in CinemaXXI will screen at the Maxxi Museum of contemporary art, a short walk from the festival?s headquarters at Auditorium Parco della Musica, though Mueller said a few will screen at Parco della Musica as well. All the feature-length films in the competition are world premieres.
The full-length films screening in CinemaXXI in competition are:
A WALK IN THE PARK from Amos Poe, United States
AVANTI POPOLO ?from Michael Wahrmann, Brazil, 2012
BLOODY DAUGHTER from St?phanie Argerich, France and Switzerland

Earliest primate had tree-climber ankles
Early Days
Skeletal fossils of the North American ancient primate Dryomomys szalayi indicate its shape (reconstruction shown) and suggest what its older relative Purgatorius may have looked like.
Doug Boyer, Duke Univ.
RALEIGH, N.C. ? Finally, the earliest known primate has more than a mouth. Several 65-million-year-old fossil ankle bones found among unsorted bits from excavations in Montana belong to a tree-dwelling species of Purgatorius, Stephen Chester of Yale University announced October 19 at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.
The first signs that Purgatorius existed came from fossil teeth unearthed nearly half a century ago at an excavation site in northeastern Montana not far from where the first Tyrannosaurus rex was found. Paleontologists named two species of what they called Purgatorius. William Clemens of the University California Museum of Paleontology and his colleagues described more teeth and some bits of mouth bones since then, but nothing had turned up from the rest of the body.
?The teeth were so primitive we didn?t know much,? said Ken Rose of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, who heard the presentation at the meeting. Several lineages diverged early in the history of primates, and sorting out their relationships has been tricky.
On the off chance that some Purgatorius bit had been overlooked during Clemens? long-running excavations in Montana, Chester and paleontologist Jonathan Bloch of the Florida Museum of Natural History started looking through the vast stored trove of fossils that has yet to be classified. After about two days of looking, they found an ankle bone. Its form shares details with known fossils of the primate lineage, but Bloch recalled, they recognized what it was as soon as they saw it. ?You know a Picasso when you see one,? he said.
No other animal known from the excavation could have had an ankle like that first find or several later specimens, Chester said. Also the size calculations put the creature in the same range as the size predicted by the tooth analysis. The shapes of the two components indicate that the ankle would have moved easily in many directions, perfect for scampering through the complex angles and knobs of trees.
The identification convinced anthropologist Daniel Gebo of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. ?A type of slam dunk,? he said of linking the ankle bone to what are called plesiadapiforms, very ancient primatelike creatures. They didn?t have all the traits of primates known today, though, so he doesn?t call Purgatorius a true primate.

Staten Island mural proclaims danger of prescription drug abuse ...
Translation: Abuse of prescription drugs has claimed far too many young lives on Staten Island, and much more must be done to combat the deadly epidemic.
"This was an opportunity to bring a very edgy message to the community," said Great Kills resident Charlie Balducci of NYC Arts Cypher, who helped spearhead the project. "This issue is so important -- people are dying."
The wall also demonstrates that graffiti artists can contribute "something positive," he said.
Enthusiasm was high at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, as the artists posed for photographs and video, and discussed their work on the 60-by-25-foot wall.
"We did it collectively, and we worked together as a team," said Rosebank street artist Kwue Molly, who was born and reared in Port Richmond. "The government has to do more to regulate the doctors who are prescribing pills," he said, pointing out his greedy-looking Uncle Sam caricature and the Federal Drug Administration renamed "Feeding Deadly Addictions."
"I believe that this epidemic has affected everyone on the Island," said Chris Malfi, 25, a West Brighton artist. "Addiction is called the blues because it weighs people down," Malfi commented, pointing out the depressed-looking man in a suit, caged behind a permanent fence and tied to a ball and chain, one of the images that his collective, Artoffpaper -- with Brendan Munday and Jared Long -- painted on the wall.
"Drugs are celebrated in all forms of entertainment," Malfi added. "But you become a zombie -- it dulls your senses."
Malfi pointed to the images of people trapped inside prescription-drug bottles to illustrate his point. "We wanted to be part of this wall. Hopefully, we will change a few lives with this imagery," he said.
CRYING ELEPHANT?
Magie Serpico, who lives in South Beach and works as an artist at Bullseye Tattoos on New Dorp Lane, has a thing about elephants.
So her contribution to the wall -- a purple elephant, shedding blood-red tears, surrounded by floating pills disguised as pretty butterflies, birds, and angels -- rings with particular poignancy.
Her intent was to produce images "childlike and colorful, but also corrupted, with graphic, disturbing content," she said on Friday, pointing out the ominous black clouds painted in the background. "And then there's the double play about an elephant in the room," she added.
GET KIDS TO THE WALL
"The art is intended to provoke thought, and engage parents and kids," said Tariq Zaid, owner of nearby Richmond Hood Company, one of the supporters of the project. He hopes that the wall will attract the attention of intermediate and high school teachers, who will bring their students to the site to ponder the artwork.
"Students need to spend time looking at it, thinking about it, talking about it, and writing about it," he said, all part of the underlying public-education message of the project. "If teachers are willing, we could even try to arrange discussion sessions between the artists and students," he added.
'IT'S ABOUT TIME'?
Silver Lake resident Holly Delaney-Wade, mother of three, attended the ribbon-cutting and was pleased with what she saw, explaining first that she has known two of the artists -- Cody Prez and Mike Shane -- "since they were babies."
"There are no clean lines" marking where the work of one artist ends and another's begins, she observed as she stepped back to take in all the graphic images. This fluidity made sense to her "because pills hit all of our neighborhoods and demographics." "It's about time," she added appreciatively. "This is well-done, and I hope to see more of it."
NYC Arts Cypher has another PILLZ KILLZ message wall in the works at a location on the South Shore, Balducci said, although he was not ready to provide details.

For film tech nerds the world over, this documentary about the advent of digital filmmaking and what it means for the old school film purists is an engaging must-see. Keanu Reeves narrates and interviews an impressive roster of directors, cinematographers, editors, actors, and execs through this highly technical history and many of the subjects are truly game. I think their candidness is largely due to Reeves being there. Most seem to feel really comfortable around him, which is essential to getting some of the gold that comes out of the likes of Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher in particular. Editor Anne Coates, the 86-year-old editor of such classics as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) and OUT OF SIGHT (1998) brings a refreshing and surprising perspective. Just when you expect the film vs. digital argument to have lines drawn depending on age, Ms. Coates shows a delightful openness to the new technology. This is an astounding time capsule piece which demonstrates how truly far we've come in digital image quality, particularly just in the past few years. There are times where you'll go back and forth about how you feel, because ultimately, both sides make great points. I couldn't believe how terrible some of the earlier digital films looked (TADPOLE or CHUCK AND BUCK anyone?). This may feel really too inside baseball for the layperson, but if you have any interest in how we experience filmed stories, this is essential viewing.

Babbage builders turn down Kickstarter
An ambitious 10-year project to build the world's first computer, the Analytical Engine, will rely on donations via the website JustGiving.
Although Kickstarter, the crowdfunding website, is about to launch in the UK, the team say the 10% commission it charges for its service is too high.
It will cost ?250,000 to build the steam-powered machine.
It was designed by Charles Babbage in the 1800s, and Ada Lovelace wrote mathematical "programmes" for it.
The project is named Plan 28 after the most complete of the 100 plans drawn up by Mr Babbage - although one single complete plan does not exist.
Continue reading the main storyEnd Quote John Graham-Cumming Plan 28We're not building it to try to compute on it - it is less powerful than the ZX81?
It has been registered as a charity, said John Graham-Cumming, who came up with the idea.
"We were going to use Kickstarter but the fees are high if you're a charity," he told the BBC and said that Gift Aid, where a charity can reclaim tax from a donation from a tax payer, was important to the project.
Mr Graham-Cumming said he was not planning to approach the government for funding.
During Mr Babbage's time he was given the equivalent of "two battleships" worth of funding from the government of the day to build the predecessor to the Analytical Engine, which he called the Difference Engine - but he failed to complete that either, much to the annoyance of officials.
"That didn't work out so well last time around," said Mr Graham-Cumming.
"You could say it was the first failed government IT project."
Historical artefactBabbage's handwritten notes and plans, which span thousands of pages, have now been fully digitised by the Science Museum in London.
The next step is to build a working 3D simulation of the machine, which is designed to be the size of a steam locomotive.
It will probably take up to three years to complete, said Mr Graham-Cumming.
"By then we might just be able to 3D print it," he said.
The value of building the Analytical Engines lies in its fundamental contribution to computer science, according to Mr Graham-Cumming.
"We are building an historical artefact," he said.
"We're not building it to try to compute on it - it is less powerful than the ZX81 [Sinclair computer from 1981]."
Other members of the team include Tim Robinson, who built a model of the machine out of Meccano pieces, and computer historian Dr Doran Swade.
But would Charles Babbage have approved?
"I can't decide whether he would be happy or exasperated that it has taken so long," said Mr Graham-Cumming.

UN envoy presses for Syria cease-fire in Damascus
BEIRUT (AP) ? The international envoy to the Syria conflict pressed his call for a cease-fire with Syrian officials during a visit to Damascus on Saturday while violence continued throughout the country unabated.
Lakhdar Brahimi, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, has appealed for a truce between rebels and President Bashar Assad's forces for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26. Brahimi arrived in Damascus Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire, which he hopes will pave the way for a longer-term truce.
A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have thrown their support behind the idea, but neither the Syrian government nor the rebels have signed on.
Brahimi met Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Saturday and was expected to hold talks Assad on Sunday.
A Foreign Ministry statement released after Saturday's meeting did not mention the proposed truce, but said the two men discussed "objective and rational circumstances to stop the violence from any side in order to prepare for a comprehensive dialogue among the Syrians."
Brahimi did not speak to reporters.
Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed to and then promptly violated internationally brokered cease-fires in the past, and there is little indication that either is willing to stop fighting now.
Clashes flared around the country on Saturday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 40 civilians and rebel fighters killed as well as more than 20 government soldiers.
Anti-regime activist say more 33,000 people have been killed since the anti-Assad uprising started in March 2011.

Beirut car bomb kills leading Syrian foe
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Senior Lebanese intelligence official Wissam al-Hassan, who led the investigation that implicated Syria and Hezbollah in the assassination of former prime minister Rafik al-Hariri, was killed by a huge car bomb in Beirut on Friday.
Hassan was also the brains behind uncovering a bomb plot that led to the arrest and indictment in August of former Lebanese minister Michel Samaha, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, in a setback for Damascus and its Lebanese allies including Hezbollah.
Saad al-Hariri, the son of Hariri, accused Assad of killing the top intelligence official.
The bomb, which exploded in a busy street during rush hour, killed seven other people and wounded about 80, officials said. The attack prompted Sunni Muslims to take to the streets in areas across the country, burning tires in protest.
Rubble and the twisted, burning wreckage of several cars filled the central Beirut street where the bomb exploded, ripping the facades and balconies off buildings.
Firefighters scrambled through the debris and rescue workers carried off the bloodied victims on stretchers. The blast came as many parents were picking up their children from school.
The attack brought the war in neighboring Syria to the Lebanese capital.
The Syria conflict, in which 30,000 people have been killed in the past 19 months, has pitted mostly Sunni insurgents against Assad, who is from the Alawite sect linked to Shi'ite Islam.
Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those supporting Assad and those backing the rebels trying to overthrow him.
Hassan, a Sunni Muslim from northern Lebanon, was a leading opponent of Assad within the Lebanese intelligence services.
"He is dead," an official who worked with Hassan told Reuters.
Two Syrian officers, including General Ali Mamlouk, the head of the Syrian national security bureau, were also indicted with Samaha in an unprecedented move against the more powerful neighbor - a major player in Lebanon's affairs for decades.
The indictment said their targets included politicians and religious figures.
Hassan had been a close aide to Hariri, a Sunni Muslim who was killed in a 2005 bomb attack. He led the investigation into the murder and uncovered evidence that implicated Syria and Hezbollah, Lebanon's pro-Iranian Shi'ite Muslim group.
Hariri supporters accused Syria and then Hezbollah of killing him - a charge they both deny. An international tribunal accused several Hezbollah members of involvement in the murder.
"His (Hassan's) killing means striking the head. The (anti-Assad) officials are all exposed now and in danger of assassination. It will be easy to assassinate them now or they will have to leave the country. He was their protector," the official said.
Hassan, who returned to Lebanon on Thursday night from Germany, has helped uncover many assassination attempts against anti-Syrian figures in Lebanon. He himself recently escaped attempts on his life.
The civil war in Syria, where the Alawite-led administration is fighting an opposition dominated by Sunni Muslims, has shaken Lebanon's own sectarian balance, triggering fighting between Sunnis and Alawites in the northern city of Tripoli.
BLOOD ON THE STREETS
The bombing, which was reminiscent of scenes from Lebanon's own 1975-1990 civil war, ripped through the street where the office of the anti-Damascus Christian Phalange Party is located near Sassine Square in Ashrafiyeh, a mostly Christian area.
Phalange leader Sami al-Gemayel, a staunch opponent of Assad and a member of parliament, condemned the attack.
"Let the state protect the citizens. We will not accept any procrastination in this matter, we cannot continue like that. We have been warning for a year. Enough," said Gemayel, whose brother was assassinated in 2006.
In the aftermath of Friday's bomb, residents ran about in panic looking for relatives as security forces blanketed the area. Ambulances ferried the wounded to hospitals, which put out an appeal for blood donations.
An employee of a bank on the street pointed to the blown-out windows of his building.
"Some people were wounded from my bank. I think it was a car bomb. The whole car jumped five floors into the air," he said.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said the government was trying to find out who carried out the attack and said those responsible would be punished.
Syria had long played a major role in Lebanese politics, siding with different factions during the civil war. It deployed troops in Beirut and parts of the country during the war and they stayed until 2005.
In Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoabie told reporters: "We condemn this terrorist explosion and all these explosions wherever they happen. Nothing justifies them."
Tension between Sunnis, Shi'ites and Christians in Lebanon has continued after the civil war but has increased due to the Syria conflict.
Khattar Abou Diab, a Middle East expert at the University of Paris, said the attack was clearly linked to the Syria crisis and Hassan was one of the few security chiefs protecting Lebanon's sovereignty and independence.
"This is now revenge against a man who confronted the Syrians and revenge against a district, a Christian district in the heart of Beirut. Regional powers are fighting in Syria and now also want to fight in Lebanon," he said.
Hezbollah's political opponents, who have for months accused it of aiding Assad's forces, have warned that its involvement in Syria could reignite the sectarian tension of the civil war.
"They warned of the implications of the Syrian crisis and here it comes," said Nabil Boumonsef, a columnist at the Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar.
"They are dragging in Lebanon so that it becomes a conflict arena," he told Reuters.
Hezbollah, which last week denied that its guerrillas were fighting alongside Assad's troops in Syria, said it condemned the bombing.
"Hezbollah sees in this heinous crime a sinful attempt to target stability and strike against national unity and calls on the security forces and judiciary to exert maximum efforts to uncover the perpetrators and bring them to justice," it said.
The U.S. government also condemned the bombing and reiterated its concerns about increasing sectarian tensions in Lebanon and a spillover from Syria.
French President Francois Hollande urged Lebanese politicians to stay united and prevent attempts to destabilize the country. The Vatican also condemned the attack.
Bombings were a hallmark of the civil war but the last such attack in Beirut was in 2008.
Beirut has undergone massive reconstruction to repair the war damage and in recent years has enjoyed a tourist boom, boosted by Beirut's pulsating nightlife. That source of revenue, crucial to Lebanon's prosperity, is now also under threat.
