Donation to KCPT will boost local coverage, add journalism jobs to KC

Kansas City Public Television has received a big donation to start a digital news center to expand civic coverage and add reporter positions, the organization announced Friday.

Kansas City Public Television revealed plans to establish a digital news center in Kansas City thanks to a high-dollar donation from an anonymous donor. KCPT will add multimedia reporter positions to staff the center.

KCPT is not disclosing the benefactor or the amount of the donation at this time but said it is at a ?major gift level.?

The center for multimedia and multiplatform interactive journalism projects will expand KCPT?s coverage of education, heath, entrepreneurship, science and the arts through a variety of platforms.

?There are stories and information that should be shared with our region daily, and the constraints placed on commercial journalism will not allow for the stories most affecting our region to be shared on the nightly news,? according to a release from KCPT. ?Our region is stronger when our citizens are informed and share an understanding of the basic facts necessary to participate in the civic, cultural and economic life of their community ? KCPT is ideally suited to provide this information.?

In addition to public television programming, the digital news center will publish more content through new and existing online platforms, such as the KCPT website, YouTube and other social media outlets.

The station also acquired the public radio station at the University of Central Missouri, KTBG-FM 90.9, in April. Located in Warrensberg, UCM is 60 miles southeast of Kansas City.

The same donor also has made a separate contribution to the Public Broadcasting Service Foundation to support PBS NewsHour programming.

KCPT said it plans to release the amount of the gift, name of the benefactor and the center?s strategic plan late this year.

Laura is an intern from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism.
