Report: Saudi Arabia Focuses Missiles on Iran, Israel

An analysis of pictures taken from space suggests Saudi Arabia has targeted Iran and Israel with Chinese-built ballistic missiles stationed at a base roughly 125 miles southwest of Riyadh, the London Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

IHS Jane's Intelligence Review identified the purported weapons as 1980s-era Dongfeng 3 missiles, which can each deliver a two-ton warhead between 1,500 and 2,500 miles. The facility housing the arms appears to have been built since 2008, according to the assessment.

One expert suggested Saudi Arabia is seeking a "deterrent capability, which is an obvious thing for them to be doing, given that Iran too is developing its own ballistic missiles."

Also directing missiles at Israel "would give the Iranians the impression that they were not being exclusively targeted, and would also allow the Saudis to suggest to the rest of the Arab world that they still consider Israel a threat," said David Butter, an associate fellow with the Chatham House think tank.
