Exercise, an opportunity to meet new people, and an evening of fun all for a very reasonable cost ? that's what the Leduc Recreational Badminton Club is offering Leduc and area residents.

"When it's -40 degrees Celsius outside playing badminton is a good way to get exercise inside," explained Lawrence Ong, member and one of the organizers of the club.

The club is open up to those 12-years-old and older and is made for any and all skill levels.

"Our youngest player is 12 and our oldest member is 74, so anyone can play," said Ong.

The season began on Sept. 21 and will run until the third week of May. The club plays at the Leduc Composite High School (LCHS) at Gym "B" every Wednesday night during the season from 7-9 p.m.

This is the fifth year the badminton club has been running in Leduc, but this is the first year Ong has decided to take it over and is hoping that this year more people will come out and play.

"We're hoping to get the interest out there for people to come and play once a week at the high school," added Ong.

If enough interest is generated, the club will look into adding another night to play, said Ong.

Not only does the sport of badminton test one's physical prowess, but it is also a very mentally tough game.

Games are set up as to how many people show up each week and those who do take part will have the opportunity to play quite a bit, added Wong.

"We're rarely sitting down. We're usually playing quite a bit."

The club is also a good opportunity for those who are new to the community and are looking to meet new people and acquaintances.

"It's a great way to meet new people, get exercise and form new friendships," stated Ong.

The cost for the entire season is $75 for adults, $40 for those 12-16 years of age, $180 for a family (two adults and two children). Considering how long the season is, it is only $3 a night when an adult purchases a season pass.

To drop in one night and try the sport out, the cost is $5 per person or for youth aged 12-16 years of age, the cost is $3.00 per person.
