9 Tips for Designing a Small Business Network

1: Plan for the software you will require.

The most important consideration for designing a small business network is the software the business will use. Many businesses use vertical market software that has been developed for and customized to a specific industry?s needs. For example: A retail business may need point-of-sale software, or a doctor?s office may need medical practice management software. If you want to use a particular software package for your specific industry, you will need to plan your hardware and networking to meet the software?s requirements. The cost of the systems required to support any software package should always be considered when selecting software.

Some vertical market software packages will require a database server and may only work with a certain types. If it will work with different databse servers, you will need to decide which one will fit your budget for hardware, software, and ongoing support and maintenance costs.

2: Plan for people.

You will need to know how many people need to use which software. You will have to plan for user licenses, storage requirements, network cabling and the devices each employee will require. You will also need to consider your customer requirements. Will they need to access your website or wireless network? Software licensing can be per server, per user, per device, for a number of concurrent users, or any combination of these.

3: Plan for devices.

How many desktops will you need to support now and in the near future? Will you support smart phones, tablets or wireless laptops? Will you need network printers, scanners, or fax? You will need to consider all of these questions in order to plan for network cabling, wireless access points or routers, and network switches.

4: Plan for remote access and telecommuting.

If you plan on hosting your website on your network or you have employees that will need to securely access sensitive resources on your network remotely, you will want to use a business class firewall and/or VPN access device.

Most small businesses do not host their own websites but, it can be done securely and may be a good solution for integrating a customer service or business application portal website with other locally stored data. This is an area where you will definitely need the help of an experienced professional! You will need to design for additional layers of security, use a business class firewall and set up alerts and monitoring.

5: Avoid consumer class hardware and software whenever possible.

Equipment and software designed for consumers is often used by businesses but can have limitations that will end up costing you more than if you started with business class products. Never use Home editions of Windows. They do not offer the security of Windows Professional editions and cannot join Microsoft Network Domains. A good 16 or 24 port, business class network switch will offer more performance and reliability than a hodgepodge of small home networking switches. Business class server hardware can be configured with auto-failover and hot pluggable disks, an important consideration for the next topic, #6.

6: Determine your requirements for systems availability.

Zero downtime will never exist for any system! The dream of many IT executives is 5 nines, or 99.999% systems availability. That only allows for 5.26 minutes of downtime per year! As I said, it is a dream. High availability is also expensive. However, there are many cost effective ways you can build fault tolerance into your network. To design your systems for the availability you need, you will first need to weigh the cost of downtime, with the cost of preventing it. You will need to plan for maintenance time as well. Maintenance will most likely be performed during non business hours, and you should be able to schedule for most of it. But expect the occasional need for unscheduled maintenance.

It will probably not be feasible to eliminate every single point of failure in your network but, you can plan for recovering all parts of your systems. Hardware is very reliable today but, it does fail. If you centralize all of your data storage onto one computer and require employees to store all business data there, a single employee?s computer going down should not be a catastrophe, especially if you have a spare computer. If you have 10 desktop computers, a fully configured spare would only cause your desktop costs to increase by 10%. That?s less than the cost of many extended warranties and maintenance agreements. PC warranties only cover the hardware. After the failed hardware is repaired, you will be responsible for re-installing all of the software and recovering the data. A spare PC is smart planning. I would also recommend you create disk images for all of your PC workstations and update them regularly. An image can be restored to a new or repaired PC quickly if needed.

Most systems problems are caused by software issues, viruses and accidents. Regular software updates and virus protection are vital for systems availability. Accidents will happen. Backup your data daily. Another good reason to centralize your data storage is that it will enable you to centralize your data backup system as well. This will increase your backup reliability and lower your costs for protecting your business? data.

7: Document document document!

Can you tell I think documenting is important? It will save you money, time and perhaps even your business! It will also increase your systems availability by reducing maintenance time and the time it takes to recover systems. Did you ever hear that you shouldn?t write passwords anywhere? I have and it is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. You cannot repair, troubleshoot or operate any system without knowing or somehow recovering the password. You can reset some things to the ?factory default?, but ?factory default? means no configuration and no data! Document your passwords! Just don?t store them on the fridge door in the employee lounge.

Document all of the configuration information you can and always update it when system and configuration changes are made. Documentation should include, IP addresses, computer names, user names, software versions, configuration files, screen shots of configurations, vendor maintenance agreements, warranty information, support phone numbers, support customer and PIN numbers, software licensing documents and any thing else you can think of that you may possibly need.

I always tell my customers that I want to make it easy for them to fire me! Well, I really don?t want it to be too easy but, if they can call a professional who has never seen their systems and they have access to thorough documentation they can get their systems back up in running in the shortest time possible.

8: Use at least one professional!

You need to find someone who knows networking and business software to help you plan and design your network. A pro can help design a system that will meet your needs today and be able to grow with your business. When I say, use at least one professional, I mean that you may also need a specialist to help you configure your financial or specific business software and train your employees. They may be technology savvy, but you will probably not have the experience needed to plan, design, install and configure your network systems. Hiring an experienced networking professional to help you with your planning, network design and configuration, will help you to keep your IT costs down and your systems up.

9: Business requirements always come first!

Technology professionals can get wrapped up in a lot of detail while planning and designing systems. It is up to the business to ensure that the needs and requirements of the business are considered throughout the planning process. A seasoned technology professional, will prompt, prod, and perhaps even aggravate you, to help them with capacity planning and growth estimates. They will want you to document your business processes and requirements. There is that documentation word again! They will schedule planning and project status meetings, and insist on reviewing plans with you. The technology supports the business effort. The business always leads the technology effort!

Sony Outplays Nintendo in Console Browsing | Search Engine Journal

Two of the biggest players in the video game console market, Nintendo and Sony, are competing hard to provide their customers with the best gaming experience by adding more and more features to their flagship consoles. As a result, video game console browsing has become one of the various Web browsing options available to consumers.

Chitika Insights decided to quantify this new trend in Internet access for their latest report. Our study examined the data from thousands of impressions on the Chitika network by gaming consoles from June 14 to June 20, 2012. A user agent analysis was conducted to come up with the following results:

Sony PlayStation is clearly the leader in this market, commanding a 79% Web usage share, as compared to 21% for Nintendo Wii. This large disparity in Web usage behavior is a bit surprising, as Nintendo has more active consoles in the U.S by a wide margin. The difference is likely that the Sony PlayStation provides its users access to Web browsing features like Facebook integration, photo slide shows, and PlayStation network videos, many of which are not present on Nintendo Wii. These features may tempt PlayStation users to use their console for more Web browsing, as compared to Wii users. Additionally, Wii users must manually enter Web addresses and search queries by pointing the ?Wii-mote? at their TV and selecting letters one at a time. This can get frustrating, and it could discourage users from utilizing the Wii to browse on a more regular basis.

While console-based browsing presently only represents a small share of overall Internet traffic, there is a concerted effort by manufacturers for the console to be a central point in the living room. Along with healthy historical sales numbers, video game consoles have the potential to develop into a more dominant point of access in the years to come. In this context, current Web browsing behavior on video game consoles can be an eye opener for advertisers and website publishers. Access over these platforms adds a completely new dimension to understanding user behavior, with Internet usage over these consoles becoming a more natural choice for younger consumers.

Kim Somers Egelsee. Keys for a balanced life.

BY KIM SOMERS EGELSEE

QUESTION; WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE A BALANCED LIFE? HOW DO I GET THERE?

Having a life in balance is the key to happiness, peace and success. If you can say that you have harmony in all of the areas of your life, it is almost 100% guaranteed that you feel more free, empowered, happy, and great; EXTRAORDINARY even. This would mean that with your relationships, social life, career/ life purpose, finances, spirituality, recreational activities, health and wellness, and whatever else that is important to your life on a scale of one to ten, would be rated at least a ten. Once you get there, you can keep growing, and get your life to a thirteen or a twenty.

Just like the third little pig did by going the extra mile, in the story, ?The Three Little Pigs?, getting your life to a ?10? plus is truly possible and so worth it! Of course, why wouldn?t you want to, right? Yes, it takes work, but the work can be fun, insightful and interesting. It is about ?YOU?! Unlike the first and second little pigs, who built their houses with straw and wood, you can be like the third pig and choose bricks. In other words, some people choose to live ordinary lives filled with stress, and doubt, others choose to do some work on themselves by reading and attending a seminar or two, and then not taking any action on what they have learned. The truly happy, peaceful and successful people work on themselves, knowing that the strong foundation of self will lead to greatness.

Therefore, the work toward the brick house is worthwhile. The first step is to BELIEVE it will happen! Your thoughts are more powerful than you think. Next, to make this belief a foundation, you can state that your life purpose is to become the best you, in line with your true self that you can; the best version of yourself possible. (Later, you can expand on your life purpose to fit your true self precisely). How to become your best self? It does take work, but the steps are fun, amazing, and become a way of life. The third step is to read, listen to CDs in the car, watch DVDs, attend seminars; all on personal development. Listen to the greats; Jim Rohn, Napoleon Hill, Niurka, Anthony Robbins, John Maxwell and more. Spend at least 2 hours per day absorbing this life changing material. Trust me, it WILL change your life, and you will start thinking clearer and more positive. This investment in your self will allow you to help others just by being you. Fourth, start to evaluate what in your life needs changing. Do you need to hang around more inspiring people? Do you need to stop mindless television watching? Could you spend an extra ten minutes exercising? After making a list of these things, you can get to work. Once you make the space by getting rid of anything negative, you make room for greatness to come in.

?For the fifth step, you can find someone to help you out. Just like the third little pig utilized. He knew that life works out better when teamwork is involved. This goes for both personally and professionally. Everyone can benefit from a mentor or coach. They can help you get to that extra level of success and joy. You will be able to fine tune any areas that need extra emphasis and attention. Almost no one can do it alone. It should be someone that you can relate to. This coach or mentor can help you with setting and achieving goals, releasing emotional baggage, guidance, and working on aspects of your life that could use improvement such as finances, relationships or purpose.

Be sure to choose who is right for you. Sometimes, a coach is best to start with, and then you choose someone as a mentor as a role model. After all of this work on yourself, it?s time to write out some goals. It?s best to pick about three to start with. Make sure to word them positively, and that they are in line with your true self. Break these goals into benchmarks, and take steps daily towards these goals.

?

Finally, the most important step is to check yourself regularly by asking questions and taking action. Evaluate by asking yourself if you are acting, behaving, talking and being who you truly are in line with your purpose. Make sure that what you are regularly reading, where you are going, who you are with, and what you are doing are matching that of who you see yourself becoming. Be sure that you are taking action daily on getting your life to this high level of happiness and success, and soon you will realize that your life has gotten to a ?10 PLUS?. Just like the third little pig?s house of bricks, you too will be unbreakable and strong.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Gunmen attacked a pro-government TV station Wednesday near the Syrian capital, killing seven employees in the latest barrage of violence as world powers prepared for a high-level meeting that the U.S. hopes will be a turning point in the crisis.

Invitations to Saturday's gathering in Geneva were sent by special envoy Kofi Annan to the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council ? including Syrian allies Russia and China ? but not to major regional players Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The absence of those two countries, as well as the lack of any appetite for international military intervention, could make it difficult for the group to find the leverage to end the bloodshed in Syria. An effort by Annan to broker a peace plan failed earlier this year.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia ? Syria's most important ally and protector ? agreeing on a transition plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. But Moscow has rejected efforts by outside forces to end the conflict or any plan to force regime change in Damascus.

The United Nations said Wednesday that the conflict, which began in March 2011 as part of the Arab Spring that swept aside entrenched leaders across the region, is descending into sectarian warfare.

President Bashar Assad has so far appeared largely impervious to world pressure and he has warned the international community from meddling in the crisis, which has seen a sharp escalation in violence in recent months. He said this week that his country is in "a genuine state of war," an increasingly common refrain from the Syrian leader.

Assad denies there is any popular will behind the uprising, which is in its 16th month, saying terrorists are driving a foreign conspiracy to destroy the country. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed in the violence.

An Associated Press photographer said the attack on the Al-Ikhbariya TV station in the town of Drousha, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) south of the capital Damascus, left bloodstains on the ground and bullet holes in the walls. The attack heavily damaged five portable buildings used for offices and studios.

Al-Ikhbariya is privately owned but strongly supports the regime.

"What happened today is a massacre," Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi told reporters. He blamed terrorists ? the same term the government uses for rebels.

The rebels deny they target the media. Activists blamed the attack on elite Syrian troops who defected from the regime Tuesday. The allegation could not be independently confirmed.

Several other staff members of the TV station were wounded in the attack, which happened just before 4 a.m., an employee said. He added that the gunmen kidnapped him along with several station guards. He was released but the guards were not.

The employee, who did not give his name for fear of retribution, said the gunmen drove him about 200 meters (yards) away and he then heard an explosion from the station.

"I was terrified when they blindfolded me and took me away," the man said by telephone.

Hours after the attack, the station was still on the air, broadcasting news of a rally in a Damascus square by people protesting the raid.

Earlier this month, two Al-Ikhbariya employees were shot and seriously wounded by gunmen in the northwestern town of Haffa while covering clashes between government troops and insurgents.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria in the uprising has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

On Wednesday, the U.N. gave a grim assessment of the crisis, saying the violence has worsened since April, when the cease-fire brokered by Annan was supposed to go into effect. There also were signs the bloodshed is descending into sectarian warfare.

"Where previously victims were targeted on the basis of their being pro- or anti-government, the Commission of Inquiry has recorded a growing number of incidents where victims appear to have been targeted because of their religious affiliation," a panel of U.N.-appointed human rights experts said in a report released in Geneva.

Sectarian warfare is one of the most dire scenarios in Syria, which for decades managed to ward off the kind of bloodshed that has long bedeviled Iraq and Lebanon.

Sunnis make up most of Syria's 22 million people, as well as the backbone of the opposition. But the Assads and the ruling elite belong to the tiny Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, which has bred deep resentments.

Several notorious attacks during the uprising appeared to have sectarian overtones ? including the Houla massacre in May, when more than 100 people were killed in a collection of villages in central Syria.

Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, who heads a U.N. panel conducting an international investigation of allegations of human rights abuses in Syria, called the country a "crime scene."

He said the probe into the Houla massacre concluded that forces loyal to the regime "may have been responsible" for many of the deaths. Investigators have said pro-regime, Alawite gunmen known as shabiha were believed to be responsible for at least some of the killings.

Houla leans toward the opposition, and most of the victims were women and children who were slain in their homes, the report said.

"The manner in which these killings took place resembles those previously and repeatedly documented to have been committed by the government," Pinheiro told the U.N.'s top human rights body in Geneva.

A final position on who was responsible for the massacre would require more work, Pinheiro said. But he said interviews conducted by the commission "indicated that government forces and shabiha have committed acts of sexual violence against men, women and children."

The U.N.'s deputy envoy for Syria, Jean-Marie Guehenno, told the Human Rights Council that the violence has "reached or even surpassed" levels seen before the April 12 cease-fire.

Fayssal al-Hamwi, the Syrian ambassador in Geneva, said the allegations against the government are "quite fantastic." Calling the council meeting blatantly political, he said he no longer wished to participate and strode out in protest.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she has "great hope" that the Geneva meeting can be a turning point in the crisis.

Annan "has developed his own very concrete road map for political transition" from the Assad regime, Clinton said. "We believe it embodies the principles needed for any political transition in Syria that could lead to a peaceful, democratic and representative outcome reflecting the will of the Syrian people."

Annan, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, said he sent invitations to Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States ? plus Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar, and the European Union.

The absence of Iran and Saudi Arabia is significant because they support opposing sides of the conflict. Iran is one of the regime's top allies, and Saudi Arabia backs Syria's opposition. Annan gave no reason for not including the countries, although the U.S. has been adamantly opposed to Iran taking part.

Iran's U.N. ambassador, Mohammad Khazaee, said the way to resolve the Syrian crisis is "cooperation among everybody, especially the major players in the region, based on a fair approach on the issue."

Russia, which along with China has twice protected Assad's regime from U.N. sanctions and continued to provide it with weapons, has argued that the West should raise pressure on the Syrian opposition to sit down for talks with the government. Moscow has argued that the Syrians themselves must determine the country's future and warned that it would firmly oppose any document urging Assad to step down.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the Geneva meeting "should be aimed at mobilizing resources that foreign players have to create conditions needed to start an all-Syrian political process, not to predetermine its direction." He warned against using the conference to "justify any future unilateral actions."

The meeting comes also at a time of regional tensions. Syria shot down a Turkish military plane last week, saying it violated Syrian airspace.

Turkey denies that, but both sides have appeared keen to avoid escalating the matter. On Wednesday, al-Zoebi, the Syrian information minister, told Turkish TV that Syrian forces may have mistaken the plane for an Israeli aircraft. Syria and Israel are enemies.

CATCHING THE EXOTIC PET BUG? | Society of Biology blog

Zoonotic diseases can arise from people keeping wild animals as exotic pets: new study in the Journal of Environmental Health Research Guest blog from Elaine Toland FRSPH, Director of the Animal Protection Agency

Although I personally don?t get to see wildlife as much as I?d like, wild animals and humans may be increasingly crossing each others? paths as low-cost getaways to remote locations allow for greater access to biodiversity. Often, excursions into the relative unknown wilds of nature encourage certain ?cautions? for the foreign traveller ? such as anti-malaria pills and jabs, and while we?re there we watch what we eat, drink or touch. A bite from a wild animal would very likely trigger alarm bells and see us venture to the sometimes ?medical jungle? that can be local ?Accident and Emergency?.

But since wild animals have been kept in captivity, zoonotic (animal-to-human) diseases have not been confined to in-situ ?animal contact experiences?. Zoos, circuses, petting zoos and the like have all played a small but sometimes important role in human disease outbreaks. A new report in the Journal of Environmental Health Research highlights the significant and growing source of zoonotic infections and infestations that arise out of exotic pet trading and keeping.

The report authors (led by a Society of Biology Fellow) list 70 diseases contractible from captive exotics and conclude that what we know is merely the ?inflamed tip of a large and expanding boil? (my choice of words but surely suitable for The Lance-it?!).

Whether wild-caught or captive-bred, it seems exotic pet animals including fishes, frogs, snakes, turtles and primates introduce novel and sometimes highly pathogenic microbes and macroparasites right into everyday homes. Once ?in? they are almost impossible to safeguard against because they quickly disseminate around the home and present a constant potential source of illness. Keep reptiles in your home and you are 17 times more likely to experience sickness than in a home without them. And, apparently, many people getting sick may never link it to their pet lizard because, often, zoonotic diseases resemble gastrointestinal and flu-like conditions and something or someone else gets the blame.

So, I think that while we are becoming more familiar with wild animals, the vast raft of bugs they innocently carry on and in them represents a new unknown ? one that we invite, Trojan horse-like, right into our living spaces. And once in our homes, we have little to no chance of not crossing paths with them. Just as most accidents happen in the home, it seems to me that the domestic environment may also now be the riskiest place to pick up an exotic disease!

Islamic chief in Arab Egypt: Will women's rights change?

For the first time in Egypt's existence, Mohammed Morsi has become not only the country's first freely elected president, but also the first Islamic head of state in an Arab country.

It's a joyous moment as Egyptians take to the streets to celebrate, but the work to restore democracy is far from over as a tug-of-war for power has just begun between the newly elected president and Egypt's ruling military.

Even though Morsi is president, the Egyptian military still holds all meaningful power including wanting a say in how Egypt's next constitution is written.

But as the situation remains fluid, issues like the treatment of women will serve as a barometer for success. Morsi has promised equal rights for all women, even announcing that he will be selecting a woman as his vice president.

PASADENA, Calif. In 1969, an exploding fireball tore through the sky over Mexico, scattering thousands of pieces of meteorite across the state of Chihuahua. More than 40 years later, the Allende meteorite is still serving the scientific community as a rich source of information about the early stages of our solar system's evolution. Recently, scientists from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) discovered a new mineral embedded in the space rockone they believe to be among the oldest minerals formed in the solar system.

Dubbed panguite, the new titanium oxide is named after Pan Gu, the giant from ancient Chinese mythology who established the world by separating yin from yang to create the earth and the sky. The mineral and the mineral name have been approved by the International Mineralogical Association's Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification. A paper outlining the discovery and the properties of this new mineral will be published in the July issue of the journal American Mineralogist, and is available online now.

"Panguite is an especially exciting discovery since it is not only a new mineral, but also a material previously unknown to science," says Chi Ma, a senior scientist and director of the Geological and Planetary Sciences division's Analytical Facility at Caltech and corresponding author on the paper.

The Allende meteorite is the largest carbonaceous chondritea diverse class of primitive meteoritesever found on our planet and is considered by many the best-studied meteorite in history. As a result of an ongoing nanomineralogy investigation of primitive meteoriteswhich Ma has been leading since 2007nine new minerals, including panguite, have been found in the Allende meteorite. Some of those new finds include the minerals allendeite, hexamolybdenum, tistarite, and kangite. Nanomineralogy looks at tiny particles of minerals and the minuscule features within those minerals.

"The intensive studies of objects in this meteorite have had a tremendous influence on current thinking about processes, timing, and chemistry in the primitive solar nebula and small planetary bodies," says coauthor George Rossman, the Eleanor and John R. McMillan Professor of Mineralogy at Caltech.

Panguite was observed first under a scanning electron microscope in an ultra-refractory inclusion embedded in the meteorite. Refractory inclusions are among the first solid objects formed in our solar system, dating back to before the formation of Earth and the other planets. "Refractory" refers to the fact that these inclusions contain minerals that are stable at high temperatures and in extreme environments, which attests to their likely formation as primitive, high-temperature liquids produced by the solar nebula.

According to Ma, studies of panguite and other newly discovered refractory minerals are continuing in an effort to learn more about the conditions under which they formed and subsequently evolved. "Such investigations are essential to understand the origins of our solar system," he says.

###

Additional authors on the American Mineralogist paper, "Panguite, (Ti4+,Sc,Al,Mg,Zr,Ca)1.8O3, a new ultra-refractory titania mineral from the Allende meteorite: Synchrotron micro-diffraction and EBSD," are John R. Beckett, senior research scientist at Caltech; Oliver Tschauner from the University of NevadaLas Vegas; and Wenjun Liu from the Argonne National Laboratory. The study was supported through grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and NASA's Office of Space Science.
