CAIR?Imam Islam Mossaad of North Austin Muslim Community Center is confirmed to be the ?Pastor of the Day? who will offer the invocation in the House Chamber at the state Capitol. Imam Islam stated:

?Praise is for the All-Mighty for the honor of opening the legislative session with a sincere prayer to Him that we get matters right for all Texans. Texas Muslims have much to offer our state and will continue to make strides of bringing more understanding, justice, security and prosperity to the people of the state of Texas.?

Throughout the day, Muslims from across the state will participate in meetings with their state legislators to discuss community concerns, including religious freedom, immigrant rights and civil rights relating to privacy and technology issues.

One of the Muslim ?rights? they advocated for was to allow blind Muslims to use horses in place of dogs as guide animals because of Muslim hatred for dogs. Horses are not supposed to be used as service animals because the constant indoor confinement required of them is both abusive and unhealthy for the physical and mental well-being of the animal. ?BNI

?Like many Texans, Muslims are concerned about the status of the economy, education, healthcare, safety, and civil liberties,? said Mustafaa Carroll, executive director of CAIR-Texas?s Houston chapter. ?Additionally, the heightened anti-Muslim rhetoric and sentiment coming from some elected officials is alarming. Our goal for the 2013 session is to mobilize people to attend, to be educated about the political process and to learn how they can become more effective advocates.?

BNI? Texas Governor?Texas governor has had uncomfortably cozy relations with at least one group of Muslims over the years.?Perry is a friend of the Aga Khan, the religious leader of the Ismailis, a sect of Shia Islam that claims a reported 15 to 20 million adherents worldwide. Sprouting from that friendship are at least two cooperation agreements between the state of Texas and Ismaili institutions, including a far-reaching program to educate Texas schoolchildren about Islam.

In 2009, Perry signed a formal agreement that provides for cooperation between Texas and the Aga Khan?s organizations in the ?fields of education, health sciences, natural disaster preparedness and recovery, culture.?Perry also brokered a 2008 partnership between the University of Texas and Aga Khan University in Pakistan to expand cooperation on programs including the Muslim Histories and Culture Project, which trains high school teachers on Muslim history and culture curricula.

Google, the EU and Competition: Speaking Different Languages

Back in December, European regulators warned Google that they expected concrete proposals to allay antitrust concerns by January. Well, January is almost over, and it sounds like regulators are still convinced that Google is abusing its search engine dominance. The European Commission is also investigating Google's attempts to seek and enforce injunctions against certain Apple and Microsoft products.

Tucson filmmaker nabs Sundance audience award

A seven-minute short film warning of the perils of catnip has won the Short Film Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Tucson filmmaker Jason Willis captured the prize with "Catnip: Egress to Oblivion?," a tongue-in-cheek take on drug education films.

"I'm completely dumbstruck and amazed!," Willis wrote on Facebook.

"Catnip is all the rage with today's modern feline, but do we really understand it?" Willis wrote in the film's press kit. "Is it a source for harmless kicks, or a potentially crippling addiction?"

"Once and for all the facts about this controversial substance are frankly discussed," Willis said, calling his project a "long-lost educational film that never was."

Shot for a budget of just $25, the film features deadpan narration on the pitfalls of nepetalacton cycloalkane, vintage "psychedelic" special effects, and interviews with wild-eyed feline aficianados of the potent plant, which reportedly comes in such strains as Mau Mau Nip Nip and Persian Haze.

Willis is a designer and musician as well as filmmaker, and performed in such standout Tucson punk bands as the Weird Lovemakers and the Knockout Pills.

The punny short is also replete with subtle shoutouts to some of Willis' fellow local punk rock pioneers ? watch and see how many you can spot.

"Catnip" has been watched nearly 350,000 times on Youtube.

"I won this based on the traffic and hits sent to YouTube, so honestly it's totally because of all of you guys ? the links that you shared completely made this happen. Fucking madness!," Willis wrote on Facebook. "Now I'm going to open a bottle of wine."

Asstacular! Are These the Greatest Gaming Glutes in the Cosmos ...

Gaming Glutes Header

Click 'play' for today's dose of butt-jiggling joy.

We?re sure you?ll all concur, gentlemen, that Monday mornings suck monkey nuts. Even beardy philanthropist Bob Geldof knows this, as the much-vaunted song he penned, I Don?t Like Mondays, attests (Prospective titles that were eventually rejected included Bollocks to Mondays and Screw It, I?m Going to Call in Sick, Pretend I?ve Got Hemorrhoids Again. Would he have been knighted by Britain?s beloved Queen Lizzie for that? He would not.)

Let?s alleviate the tedium of this craptacular day, then, with an amusing-yet-arousing optical illusion. Allegedly, there?s a television in the above video, but we?re damned if we can see it. We?ll wager our wangs that you won?t, either. Test your powers of observation against the fine form of ?Tahiticora,? who -purportedly- is indulging in Colin McRae Dirt 2.

Still, the copious quantities of dirt (sweet dirty, dirty dirtiness) are plain to see, and what more could our gonads ask for?

Will Nokia?s Music+ Premium Service Be Enough To Dent Lumia Sales? Unlikely.

NM_465Nokia has had its free Nokia Music service for a while, allowing free music streaming on its Lumia handsets in the US since last September. But the service allowed for only a limited number of song skips and playlists. Now it's announced the impending launch of Music+, a premium music streaming service which will afford an infinite number of skips and unlimited downloads to Nokia?s Mix Radio service.

Bioinspired fibers change color when stretched

Jan. 28, 2013 ? A team of materials scientists at Harvard University and the University of Exeter, UK, have invented a new fiber that changes color when stretched. Inspired by nature, the researchers identified and replicated the unique structural elements that create the bright iridescent blue color of a tropical plant's fruit.

The multilayered fiber, described January 28 in the journal Advanced Materials, could lend itself to the creation of smart fabrics that visibly react to heat or pressure.

"Our new fiber is based on a structure we found in nature, and through clever engineering we've taken its capabilities a step further," says lead author Mathias Kolle, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). "The plant, of course, cannot change color. By combining its structure with an elastic material, however, we've created an artificial version that passes through a full rainbow of colors as it's stretched."

Since the evolution of the first eye on Earth more than 500 million years ago, the success of many organisms has relied upon the way they interact with light and color, making them useful models for the creation of new materials. For seeds and fruit in particular, bright color is thought to have evolved to attract the agents of seed dispersal, especially birds.

The fruit of the South American tropical plant, Margaritaria nobilis, commonly called "bastard hogberry," is an intriguing example of this adaptation. The ultra-bright blue fruit, which is low in nutritious content, mimics a more fleshy and nutritious competitor. Deceived birds eat the fruit and ultimately release its seeds over a wide geographic area.

"The fruit of this bastard hogberry plant was scientifically delightful to pick," says principal investigator Peter Vukusic, Associate Professor in Natural Photonics at the University of Exeter. "The light-manipulating architecture its surface layer presents, which has evolved to serve a specific biological function, has inspired an extremely useful and interesting technological design."

Vukusic and his collaborators at Harvard studied the structural origin of the seed's vibrant color. They discovered that the upper cells in the seed's skin contain a curved, repeating pattern, which creates color through the interference of light waves. (A similar mechanism is responsible for the bright colors of soap bubbles.) The team's analysis revealed that multiple layers of cells in the seed coat are each made up of a cylindrically layered architecture with high regularity on the nano- scale.

The team replicated the key structural elements of the fruit to create flexible, stretchable and color-changing photonic fibers using an innovative roll-up mechanism perfected in the Harvard laboratories.

"For our artificial structure, we cut down the complexity of the fruit to just its key elements," explains Kolle. "We use very thin fibers and wrap a polymer bilayer around them. That gives us the refractive index contrast, the right number of layers, and the curved, cylindrical cross-section that we need to produce these vivid colors."

The researchers say that the process could be scaled up and developed to suit industrial production.

"Our fiber-rolling technique allows the use of a wide range of materials, especially elastic ones, with the color-tuning range exceeding by an order of magnitude anything that has been reported for thermally drawn fibers," says coauthor Joanna Aizenberg, Amy Smith Berylson Professor of Materials Science at Harvard SEAS, and Kolle's adviser. Aizenberg is also Director of the Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology at Harvard and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard.

The fibers' superior mechanical properties, combined with their demonstrated color brilliance and tunability, make them very versatile. For instance, the fibers can be wound to coat complex shapes. Because the fibers change color under strain, the technology could lend itself to smart sports textiles that change color in areas of muscle tension, or that sense when an object is placed under strain as a result of heat.

Additional coauthors included Alfred Lethbridge at the University of Exeter, Moritz Kreysing at Ludwig Maximilians University (Germany), and Jeremy B. Baumberg, Professor of Nanophotonics at the University of Cambridge (UK).

This research was supported by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative, by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and through a postdoctoral research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The researchers also benefited from facilities at the Harvard Center for Nanoscale Systems, which is part of the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard also contributed to this research.

Iran launches monkey into space: state news agency

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has successfully launched a live monkey into space, the state news agency IRNA said on Monday, touting it as an advance in a missile and space program that has alarmed the West and Israel.

There was no independent confirmation of the report, which quoted a defense ministry statement. It said the launch coincided "with the days of" the Prophet Mohammad's birthday last week but gave no date.

IRNA said the monkey was sent into space on a Kavoshgar rocket. The rocket reached a height of more than 120 km (75 miles) and "returned its shipment intact", IRNA reported.

The Islamic Republic's state-run, English-language Press TV said the monkey was retrieved alive.

Iran announced plans in 2011 to send a monkey into space, but that attempt was reported to have failed.

Western powers are concerned that the long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be used to launch nuclear warheads. Tehran denies such suggestions and says its nuclear activity is for peaceful energy only.

(AP) ? French and Malian troops regained control of the airport and bridge of the crucial, northern city of Gao on Saturday, marking their biggest advance yet in their bid to oust al-Qaida-linked extremists who have controlled northern Mali for months, military officials said.

The move comes just two weeks after France launched its military offensive in support of the shaky, central government of this former French colony. It is unclear what kind of resistance French and Malian troops will face in the coming days.

The French military said in a statement on its website that their special forces, which had stormed in by land and by air, had come under fire from "several terrorist elements" that were later "destroyed."

In a later press release entitled "French and Malian troops liberate Gao" the French ministry of defense said they were bringing back the town's mayor, Sadou Diallo, who had fled to the Malian capital of Bamako far to the west.

However, a city official interviewed by telephone by The Associated Press said coalition forces so far only controlled the airport, the bridge and surrounding neighborhoods.

And in Paris, a defense ministry official clarified that the city had not been fully liberated, and that the process of freeing Gao was continuing.

Both officials spoke only on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Swooping in under the cover of darkness, the French and Malian forces faced sporadic "acts of harassment" during the day, said Col. Thierry Burkhard, a French military spokesman in Paris. He had no immediate estimate on casualties.

Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, was seized by a mixture of al-Qaida-linked fighters more than nine months ago, and the battle to retake the city is expected to be tough.

The rebel group that turned Gao into a replica of Afghanistan under the Taliban has close ties to Moktar Belmoktar, the Algerian national who has long operated in Mali and who last week claimed responsibility for the terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in Algeria.

His fighters are believed to include Algerians, Egyptians, Mauritanians, Libyans, Tunisians, Pakistanis and even Afghans.

The French assault began with the capture of the airport, a strategic landing strip that opens the way for easier sorties all over northern Mali.

The further capture of a major bridge leading into the town means that the jihadists "saw their means of transport and their logistics sites destroyed," French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a statement.

The operation in Gao comes at the same time as airstrikes in the two other provincial capitals held by the extremists ? the cities of Timbuktu and Kidal, which like Gao fell to the rebels last April, during the chaotic aftermath of a coup in the distant capital. Nearly 30 bombs have been fired from fighter jets over the past two days, said France's military in a communique.

The simultaneous aerial attacks also come at the same time that ground troops are carrying out a pincer movement, with French and African land forces heading to Gao from Niger, where Chad has sent a battalion.

The Pentagon said late Saturday that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has told Le Drian the U.S. will aid the French military with aerial refueling missions.

U.S. aerial refueling planes would be a boost to air support for French ground forces as they enter areas of Mali that are controlled by al-Qaida-linked extremists.

The U.S. was already helping France by transporting French troops and equipment to the West African nation.

French and Malian forces are also heading to Timbuktu, via the central corridor that leads straight north from the central Malian city of Segou, via the recently recaptured town of Diabaly.

In an interview Saturday, Col. Shehu Usman Abdulkadir told The Associated Press that the African force will be expanded from an anticipated 3,200 troops to some 5,700 ? which does not include the 2,200 soldiers promised by Chad.

Most analysts had said the earlier figure was far too small to confront the Islamists given the vast territory they hold ? an area larger than Afghanistan.

"Because they've seen that the area itself, northern Mali is too large for that number of troops so there was a need to increase the number and that's why we arrived at 5700," said Abdulkadir, the force commander. "I believe that as time goes on it may be necessary to increase the strength again. Because France pulls out we definitely must have to increase the strength."

Since France began its military operation, the Islamists have retreated from three small towns in central Mali: Diabaly, Konna and Douentza.

For the first time on Saturday, Malian authorities opened the town of Konna to reporters. Although in most places Malians have applauded the arrival of the French, the town of Konna, built around a single, hard-top road, provides a counterweight and reveals the human toll of the operation.

Konna's mayor had earlier said that 11 civilians were killed during the airstrikes. Among them were four relatives of Souleymane Maiga, a young, 20-something man who ran for cover on Jan. 11, the first day of the airstrikes.

He hid between two mud walls separating his compound from that of his neighbor. His aunt, and the four children, including several young girls that were with her, abandoned the pot on an open flame where they were preparing the midday meal and ran inside the house.

French combat helicopters, looking for rebels, strafed the buildings made of nothing more than mud mixed with straw.

"The women were preparing food right here in the shade of this tree, when we heard the noise made by the aircraft. I ran and threw myself between the two walls over there," said Maiga. "After it was over, I went to the house, and when I opened the door, I saw that they were dead. Of the five people inside, only one survived. A toddler. The bodies were one on top of the other. The toddler was crying. The bullets had pierced the door. I tried to find their pulses, but they were gone. I realized it was over. I picked up the child and took him to a relative's house in town."

The zinc door of the modest house is pockmarked by bullet holes, some several inches wide. If you close it behind you, they let in jets of light, which illuminate the unlit interior. The can of tomato paste that the women had just opened in order to make a sauce served over rice, still sits where they left it. It had been partially opened, and now the tomato paste inside has spoiled.

My method has two goals: to promote good health and to have fun.

About Stephen Jepson?

At age 72, Stephen Jepson is living proof of his philosophy of lifetime fitness called Never Leave the Playground. He rides a unicycle, juggles while balancing on a bongo board, throws knives and plays jacks with both hands, walks a tightrope, swam across Iowa?s Spirit Lake at age 66, and has won over 80 gold medals in swimming since age 65. And more. Much more.

He knows the secret is to ?just keep moving? through constant play, not exercise. He?s developed toys for all ages and degrees of physical fitness to use throughout our daily lives so we never have to leave the playground no matter where we are or what we?re doing.

No matter how impaired the body has become through neglect or disease or aging, consistent movement is imperative to regain and maintain balance, stability, coordination and growth. He calls it ?age proofing the brain and body,? and it can begin at any age or any condition of the body.

Stephen received his MFA in ceramics from Alfred University and was a professor at the University of Florida for eight years before starting his own company, Jepson Pottery. He?s won many awards for his pottery including having a piece purchased by the Smithsonian, and has an international following with his instructional videos and teaching seminars at his World Pottery Institute.

However, the last three years, he has committed himself to researching and documenting his theory of lifetime fitness which has culminated in Never Leave the Playground.

He can help you, too, no matter where you are in your physical journey, and he?s invented the toys and games to help us play our way to and maintain our health at any age.

Nestle And Childhood Obesity | Your Health Journal

From the web master?..I had the privilege of working with Nestle many years ago, so ? when a press release was emailed to me today, I wanted to share it here, as Nestle does do a lot for the communities behind the scenes. As always, if you have a health related press release, feel free to use the contact form above to send it along.

Nestle steps up efforts to help reduce childhood obesity in the US

A Nestl? programme in the city of Newark in the United States that teaches parents of young children the fundamentals of good nutrition is to be expanded.

?Nestl?/Newark Now!?, which was launched in 2012 with Newark?s Mayor Cory A. Booker, will reach twice as many families in year two. Some of the mothers and other women who went through the first programme will become ?peer educators?.

As Nestl? announced, in Newark, nearly one third of children aged 3-5 years old are classified as obese ? three times the US national average. ?Nestl?/Newark Now!? has been designed to try to address this. The programme, run by Nestl? and the community organisation Newark Now!, helps fill a ?gap? in nutrition education that occurs after the first year of post-natal doctor visits and before the child reaches school age.

A bilingual public health nutritionist leads the sessions in community centres around Newark.

Fifty-five families took part in the first year, learning about the importance of breastfeeding, how to increase fruit and vegetable consumption, healthy snacking, dealing with fussy eaters, portion control and physical activity. The curriculum was created by an advisory board made up of local nutrition and public health experts, as well as community members with experience in engaging with local residents to help manage programme content and activities.

Starting in March, parents and other women who were picked to become ?peer educators?, will begin sharing their knowledge with hundreds more families.

The Nestl?/Newark Now! curriculum draws on the findings of the Nestl? Feeding Infants & Toddlers Study (FITS).

FITS studied the dietary habits and nutrient intake of 3,200 infants, toddlers and preschoolers, making it one of the largest, most comprehensive studies of its kind in the United States.

The study found that children aged as young as 12-24 months old were beginning to develop unhealthy dietary patterns that may lead to childhood obesity.

The study also revealed fruit and vegetables were lacking in children?s diets.

At an official ceremony in the city to mark the next phase of the programme, Newark Mayor Booker and Deputy Mayor Margarita Muniz were joined by Sylvana Linetti, Nutrition Director for Nestl?/Newark Now and Marilyn Knox, CEO of Nestl? Infant Nutrition.

Lavar Young, President and Chief Executive Officer for Newark Now and Dr Anyaoku, Director General of Paediatrics for the Children?s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, also attended.

Zimbabwe orders diamond fraud probe as election looms

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party has told police to investigate five provincial leaders accused of swindling nearly a million dollars from diamond mining companies, an apparent image clean-up ahead of elections expected this year.

State media said on Friday a ruling party politburo meeting chaired by Mugabe this week had ordered the probe amid allegations two diamond mining firms were forced to donate $750,000 for use by the party. The cash was later diverted to personal projects, state media said.

Partnership Africa Canada, a member of the Kimberley Process initiative against "blood diamonds", said in November at least $2 billion of revenues from the eastern Marange diamond fields had been stolen by people linked to Mugabe's party.

The state mining firm said the gems were sold transparently and ZANU-PF has consistently denied accusations that its officials and top generals are looting diamond revenues.

Two Chinese companies are mining diamonds in partnership with the government in Marange, which was until recently under Kimberley Process sanctions due to allegations of smuggling and rights abuses.

Political analysts see the push for a police investigation as part of efforts to improve ZANU-PF's image ahead of presidential and parliamentary polls likely to be held by September.

Mugabe, in power since Zimbabwe's independence from Britain in 1980, was forced into a unity government with arch rival Morgan Tsvangirai following disputed polls in 2008.

ZANU-PF has endorsed its 88-year-old leader as its candidate for the presidential vote. It is expected to face a stiff challenge because of a widespread belief the veteran rulers' policies have wrecked the economy.

Resentment runs deep in Azeri town hit by rioting

ISMAILLI, Azerbaijan (Reuters) - The charred remains of a hotel are the only overt sign of rioting that swept this small Azeri town this week, but the resentment that fuelled the violence is hard to miss.

The Ismailli riot was quashed as quickly by police as other protests in the former Soviet republic but sent a warning to President Ilham Aliyev: Patience is wearing thin with the huge wealth gap a decade after he succeeded his long-ruling father.

Ismailli, with its dreary one-storey Soviet-era buildings, shows no sign of benefiting from the vast oil and natural gas riches that have helped transform parts of the capital Baku into a showcase of shimmering glass and metal where luxury cars cruise next to the Caspian Sea.

Residents of the town of 15,000, about 200 km (125 miles) northwest of Baku, complain of corruption across the tightly controlled country of nine million, an overbearing government and a lack of jobs, money and prospects.

They said Thursday's rioting was spontaneous, caused by anger over what one called the "unacceptable behavior of rich guys from the capital" suspected of involvement in a car accident, but that passions were fed by deep-seated resentment.

"Their behavior was just the last straw and became a reason for the disturbances," said Mamed, a 50-year-old man who declined to give his full name.

Samir, a 26-year-old market stall holder, said: "The people in the leadership of our country care only about their own interests and forget about ordinary people like us."

Squeezed between Iran and Russia, mainly Muslim Azerbaijan is a transit hub for U.S. troops based in Afghanistan - a role its critics say limits Western powers' willingness to sanction Baku over human rights abuses and concerns about democracy.

Azerbaijan also supplies energy to Europe and Western oil companies who are involved in bringing Caspian oil through the Caucasus country would be concerned by any widespread violence and instability. But few would expect that to happen now, months before a presidential election due in October.

"I don't believe that this situation can spread to other regions as there is no basis for that," Ali Akhmedov, deputy chairman of the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party, told a meeting with residents on Friday.

"And it's not linked to this being an election year. There are just some destructive forces inside the country who are interested in the destabilization of the situation, but they are weak."

STRUGGLE TO MAKE ENDS MEET

The Chirag Hotel was a target of the rioters because it was owned by the driver involved in the car accident. His wealth and brash behavior had long upset the locals, some residents said.

All that is left of the hotel now is some burnt black walls. It was set ablaze by a crowd of 3,000 after a mass brawl that started after the owner drove his car into an electricity pole and was suspected of being drunk.

Overt displays of wealth, common among the lucky few who have struck it rich across the former Soviet Union, breed discontent among those at the other end of the scale who are just struggling to make ends meet.

"Our main problem is unemployment. There are no jobs at all and local government does not do anything to help us," said a 57-year-old woman who identified herself only as Elmira.

She has made her living at the local fruit and vegetable market since the closure of the tobacco factory where she used to work.

Her state pension is 200 manats, 80 manats of which she pays for electricity and other public services. Her disabled husband receives a minimum pension of 70 manats, and her two sons are unemployed.

Samir, the market stall holder, said he used to work in a shop in Baku but had returned to his native town two years ago after losing his job in the capital.

"I earn about 300 manats ($375) each month, but how can you live on this money with wife and a kid," he says.

ALIYEV DYNASTY

Aliyev was assured of the presidency by being nominated as the ruling party's candidate by his father, Heydar, in 2003. Heydar Aliyev had ruled Azerbaijan as Communist Party chief in Soviet times and returned as president in 1993, two years after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Ilham Aliyev is expected to win a presidential election in October but, despite the lack of an obvious alternative, is sure to do his utmost to prevent protests spreading.

Young Azeri opposition activists posted a message via Facebook calling for a protest in Baku on Friday in support of Ismailli residents, but later postponed it until Saturday without giving a reason.

Mass protests are rare and are usually quashed quickly by police in Azerbaijan. Riot police also managed quickly to disperse a protest last March in the town of Quba, 170 km (100 miles) north of Baku, after several hundred residents demanded the resignation of its mayor.

Local authorities and officials who arrived in Ismailli from Baku met residents on Friday to try to keep a lid on discontent.

Nizami Alekperov, the local governor, dismissed calls for his resignation during this week's protests and made light of the rioting.

"Such incidents spoil the image of our region, which is becoming an attractive tourist destination," he said.
