Home Improvement Interior Designers Mumbai, Design Ideas and ...

We all think about home decor at one point of time. Even if you are satisfied with your home decor, you may want to make a few small changes to give your home a fresh look. You need not to be a professional interior designer to decorate your home the way you like, but you can just take some ideas and tips to do that.

You can transform your home into a chic and elegant place by getting information regarding lights and fixtures, placement of different pieces of furniture in appropriate places, buying the right kind of furniture and accessories to make your ideas a reality.

No doubt, we spend most of our time, money and effort in decorating our homes, but recently there is a significant increase in demand in finding the best interior designs ideas for the offices too.

In office one needs to have extremely conscious about the office interior designs. You need to plan your interior designing to avoid over any mess and utilize even the smallest space possible. If you have good interior decoration then your office space can fetch your client at the maximum extent.

]]>

Your office interior designs must reflect the long term goal of your firm. People who are willing to connect with your company should be able to figure out that how this company going to benefit them in the longer run, is there any wavelength-match of client and vendor goals. Also, the clientele that you possess should also be kept in mind while implementing the interior designing concept.

Before you place certain pieces of furniture and accent pieces in each room, you should review the colors of each item. Items that are warm in color should be placed together and items that are cool in color should be placed together. If you can have your furniture and decorations match, the entire interior decorating design will look all the better when it is finally finished.

When home decorating, the furniture you select such as a sofa, a bookcase must not only work well in terms of comfort and practicality but should suit the style of the room to get a harmonious effect with other items in the room and that includes the wall colour. You want a room that feels comfortable no matter what style or theme you choose.

In the final analysis of color and style and trends, your home design ideas need to reflect you and your interests. With the massive amount of paint color choices available, you can easily create any environment you choose. And change it whenever you like. So while the forecasters may influence what?s available to furnish your home, if you don?t like it, find your own path. The most livable solution will likely be a blend of styles/colors creating a space that is uniquely your own. It will be personal to you and you?ll love the welcome your home extends to you every time you return.

(AP Photo/AEG, File)

(AP) ? The developer behind a $1.2 billion plan to build a football stadium in downtown Los Angeles got a key boost Tuesday with a law that will help it avoid lengthy court fights.

Billing the measure as a job creation push, Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill (SB 292) at a Los Angeles Convention Center ceremony with executives from Anschutz Entertainment Group, which is proposing to build a 72,000-seat stadium next to the convention center.

With California's unemployment rate in double digits, Brown said the stadium, to be called Farmers Field, would create 12,000 construction jobs and 11,000 permanent jobs.

"This is the way we get people working," he said.

The bill would expedite resolution of legal challenges to AEG's project, sending lawsuits over its environmental impact directly to the California Court of Appeal and bypassing the Superior Court. The appeals court would have to make a ruling within 175 days.

AEG would thus avoid a protracted and costly court battle that could hold up construction of the stadium, which could break ground as early as June if it passes environmental muster and secures an NFL team.

In return, AEG, which owns the Staples Center and L.A. Live entertainment complex next to the convention center, pledged to build a "green stadium" and make it public-transit friendly.

Brown also signed AB 900, a companion bill that would allow other large projects to apply for similar expedited court rulings while preserving environmental standards.

The AEG bill's co-author, state Sen. Alex Padilla, a Los Angeles Democrat, said creating jobs while maintaining environmental protections was key in hammering out the measure.

"With unemployment over 12 percent and over 13 percent in the Los Angeles region, we do need to act with a sense of urgency," he said.

A rival group, Majestic Realty, has proposed building a stadium in the City of Industry, outside Los Angeles. It obtained its own earmarked bill in 2009 when legislators gave it an exemption from some environmental laws and protection from lawsuits over environmental issues.

The AEG bill did not go as far as that measure. "We're going to protect the environment," Brown said. "But there are too many damn regulations. I've got some power now. Let's cut the barriers and regulations and move ahead."

AEG President Tim Leiweke said the legislation shows the NFL that the stadium has statewide backing.

"We now have a bill that gives us certainty that this stadium will be built," Leiweke said. "Now we put on our best effort and get the NFL back here."

Leiweke said he has spoken with several teams about moving to Los Angeles, but declined to specify which ones. He said he plans to follow the guidance of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about which teams would be candidates.

The company hopes to unveil the stadium in time for the 2016 season, but is prepared for a 2017 launch if necessary, he said.

Some environmentalists said they supported the AEG bill after the developer agreed to submit a full environmental impact report, purchase carbon credits locally to offset emissions and take measures to lessen the impact of traffic for the life of the stadium, among other items.

Warner Chabot, chief executive of the California League of Conservation Voters, said he was pleased those measures were included in the bill since it already had the votes to pass.

"We don't like the principle of doing special legislation for a single project," Chabot said. "It sets a bad precedent, but it would have set a worst precedent for the community without these things."

Padilla said public works projects are often granted similar protections. "It's not anything new or unprecedented," he said.

The Planning and Conservation League's legislative director, Jena Price, said her group continued to oppose the bill, largely because it was ramrodded through the Legislature, bypassing committee review and going straight to a floor vote.

Still, she noted that the bill reflected a compromise that did not give AEG the same wide-ranging exemptions given to Majestic Realty.

"An eleventh hour bill is never a smart one," she said. "It's one more step in taking away the voice of local communities."

In a related development, KCAL-TV reported Tuesday that the city is awarding a $1 million federal community block development grant to the architectural firm designing the stadium so it can relocate from Santa Monica to a downtown office.

Advocates for the poor told the station that they were incensed the grant is not being used to help the needy and complained to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which administers the money.

HUD told them the move was legal as long as the firm, Gensler & Associates, creates 29 new jobs, with more than half going to low-income workers.

Loss of 'lake lawnmowers' leads to algae blooms

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Unprecedented algae growth in some lakes could be linked to the decline of water calcium levels and the subsequent loss of an important algae-grazing organism that helps keep blooms at bay.

Daphnia?also known as water fleas?act like microscopic lawnmowers in lakes, feeding on algae and keeping it in check. However, without sufficient calcium, these water fleas cannot reproduce.

"When water calcium levels get low and Daphnia populations decrease in any lake, algal growth goes unchecked and blooms can occur," says lead author and biology doctoral student Jennifer Korosi. "Losing an important grazer like these water fleas has a domino effect that leads to other water quality problems."

Declining calcium concentrations in some lakes, which is linked to acid deposition and logging, has only recently been identified as a serious environmental problem in North America and Europe.

By studying microscopic fossils and other indicators preserved in a lake sediment core from Lake George (Nova Scotia), the Queen's research team found that algal production remained relatively constant throughout the last century until around1990 when the levels tripled. The increase in algae directly coincided with the decrease of Daphnia in the lake.

"Algal blooms appear to be increasing in many lake regions," says biology professor John Smol, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change, and previous winner of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Herzberg Gold Medal as Canada's top scientist. "Decreasing calcium levels appear to be one more factor that can exacerbate this problem. This is particularly worrisome given that many other stressors, such as climate warming and fertilizer runoff, are already contributing to the production of nuisance algal blooms. This is one more nail in the coffin."

Other members of the research team include PhD candidate Joshua Thienpont and undergraduate student Samantha Burke. Funding for the research comes from NSERC.

These findings will be published in the next issue of the prestigious international journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Find the Best Window Replacement Contractors for Home ...

September 27, 2011 Posted by admin

Houses in Sacramento are expensive but their value depreciates year after year. To keep the value of your house up and at par with the current realty market, it?s best to invest in home improvement projects. Since home improvement in Sacramento can be costly, it?s best to start with relatively affordable and easy to implement window replacements.

Replacing your windows and window treatments is an easy way to increase your home?s value. However, it can quickly turn into a financial nightmare if you attempt to do it yourself or got an inexperienced contractor to do it. To ensure high quality window replacements and home improvement service, it?s best to get a Yancey home improvement contractor from Replacement Windows Sacramento.

Why Window Replacements are a Great Idea?

Aside from the aesthetic aspect, there are a several reasons you should consider window replacements for home improvement in Sacramento.

  • It can stop leaks and gaps. Due to wear and tear and seasonal changes, your house?s windows may not fit into their frames perfectly anymore. This is bad news since gaps from imperfectly closed windows can let insects and bugs creep into your home. Rain can also splatter against the panes and water droplets can seep into the cracks. Replacing your window with panes and frames that fit perfectly can stop this.
  • It?s energy-efficient. Gaps along your window frames do not only let bugs in, they also let heat and cool air out. Poor insulation means more work for your air conditioner and heater which translates to a higher utility bill for you. This is an especially important factor for home improvement in Sacramento where the weather can be quite humid and unpredictable.
  • It reduces health hazards in your home. Broken and cracked windows, as well as faulty hinges, are dangerous and can cause injury to you and your family. Stop accidents before they happen by replacing broken windows with the help of a professional contractor.

Why Hire a Professional Home Improvement Contractor?

A professional contractor, especially a Yancey home improvement contractor from Replacement Windows Sacramento, can get the job done fast, safely, and within your means without sacrificing high quality. With a professional contractor, your home improvement in Sacramento can be done with little inconvenience and the most benefit to you.

A professional home improvement contractor can:

  • Estimate the cost and time needed for the project. Home improvement contractors visit your home and check your windows to determine the extent of the damage so there?s no guessing about your how much your project will cost.
  • Finish the project on time and keep you in the loop. Professional contractors update clients on the status of their projects on home improvement in Sacramento. Yancey home improvement contractors even have project managers for this purpose so there is no uncertainty and restless waiting.

HP Pavilion p7-1030

The HP Pavilion p7-1030 ($580 street) is an entry-level/mid-range desktop PC, with the kind of parts and performance normally seen in higher-priced desktops. The p7-1030's Intel Core i3 processor and 8GB of RAM may not offer professional-grade multimedia or gaming muscle, but it's a great system for the household, especially if you're looking to replace a six- or seven-year-old system.

Design and Features
The p7-1030 is a mid-tower PC with a black aluminum chassis and a plastic front panel. The panel has the same glossy black finish we've seen on other entry-level desktops from HP, like the HP Pavilion p7-1047cb ($799 list, 4 stars). The front panel has a sliding cover that hides two USB 2.0 ports and headphone and microphone jacks. At the top of the panel, there's a multimedia card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro, xD, and Compact Flash), as well as the power button. Below the card reader is a DVD +/- RW drive. A second 5.25-inch drive bay sits just below it, empty, and ready for an upgrade. On the back of the tower there are four additional USB 2.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and three audio jacks: microphone in, audio-in, and audio-out.

The p7-1030 offers VGA and DVI video outputs, for hooking the desktop up to an external monitor or display?you could even utilize both outputs simultaneously for a dual-monitor setup. You won't be able to use your HDTV as a monitor, though, as there's no HDMI connection available. This exemption is usually the case when vendors want to keep the cost of a system low. Though it may not come with a monitor, the p7-1030 does include a wired USB keyboard and wired optical mouse. The keyboard is surprisingly comfortable, if perhaps on the mushy side, and its low-profile design is attractive. The mouse is also passable for a bundled device, but you'll want to pick up a new keyboard and mouse, if only to switch to something wireless that won't take up two of the six available USB ports.

Internally, the p7-1030 comes equipped with a spacious 1TB 7,200rpm hard drive, which is the same size and speed of the drive found in the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaCentre K330-11691AU ($599.99 list, 4 stars). A PCIe Mini card provides 802.11n Wi-Fi, which means you won't have to awkwardly find a place near your router or run long Ethernet cables to connect to the Web. There's a little room to grow in this mid-tower chassis. In addition to the aforementioned unoccupied 5.25-inch drive bay, you will also find one available PCI Express x16 slot and three open PCI Express x1 slots. A 250-watt power supply means you'll be limited to adding an entry-level graphics card, but even something as basic as the AMD Radeon HD 6450 would provide an improvement in terms of graphics and gaming capability. Because the system comes with 8GB of DDR3 memory, which occupies both DIMM slots, upgrading memory will mean removing at least one of the memory sticks. That said, it's hard to think of you needing more than 8GB at this point.

The p7-1030 comes with several programs pre-installed on the hard drive. Some of these are useful, like a starter version of Microsoft Office 2010, a 30-day trial for Norton Online Backup, and a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2011, but we've seen longer trial periods on competing systems, like the 90-day trial on the Lenovo K330-11691AU. The p7-1030 also comes with HP LinkUp, a program that lets you access other Windows 7 computers on the same local network. Even computers from other manufacturers can download the LinkUp software to share files. It's like having your own local cloud. Desktop links to websites like Netflix and Hulu aren't a problem, but you may be irritated by the multiple screen reading programs from Blio, Kobo, PDF Complete, and Zinio. You'll definitely want to remove extras like toolbars from Bing and Google.

Performance
HP Pavilion p7-1030 The p7-1030 is outfitted with a 3.1GHz dual-core Intel Core i3-2100 processor, which behaves like a quad-core CPU thanks to Intel's Hyper-Threading technology. Paired with 8GB of memory, twice that of the Dell Inspiron i620-228NBK ($479.99 list, 4 stars), the p7-1030 scored 2,536 points in PCMark 7 performance tests, outpacing the Dell i620-228NBK by 241 points. . In Cinebench R11.5 tests, the p7-1030 matched the speeds produced by other systems with the same processor, like the Dell i620-228NBK (2.99) and Lenovo K330-11691AU (2.98). It was, however, left behind by the Core i5-equipped HP p7-1047cb (4.15) and Asus Essentio CM1730-05 ($569.99, 3 stars) (5.19) with its six-core AMD processor.

The p7-1030 is also a capable desktop when it comes to media creation. In our Handbrake test, it finished encoding our video file in 1 minute 40 seconds, whereas the AMD-equipped Asus CM1730-05 took over 2 minutes to complete the task (2:03). The Dell i620-228NBK, on the other hand, just missed the 1:40 mark by 2 seconds. The p7-1030 finished Photoshop CS5 in 3:46. The only comparative system to produce better scores was the Core i5-equipped HP p7-1047cb, which produced times of 1:29 in Handbrake and 3:31 in Photoshop.

The p7-1030's integrated Intel graphics won't let you get too far in terms of 3D gaming; for the heavy lifting, a dedicated graphics card is necessary. The desktop wouldn't even run our 3DMark 11 graphics benchmark test, and without support for DirectX 11, it wouldn't run our Lost Planet 2 test either. The only test we could run was Crysis (DirectX 10), which scored an unplayable 13 frames per second at medium resolution and detail settings. You'll have to upgrade to a discrete graphics card to play anything more demanding than World of Warcraft at low settings.

As entry-level systems go, the HP Pavilion p7-1030 offers a surprisingly potent collection of hardware, with processing power and storage space that should satisfy entry-level shoppers. Features like 1TB of storage space and a full-fledged Intel Core i3 processor make it a compelling choice for anyone on a budget. Shoppers can buy it with confidence, but bargain hunters will note that the HP Pavilion p7-1047cb includes a monitor, and the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron i620-228NBK offers a similar package for about $100 less.

Groupon newest deal to reward customer loyalty

(AP) ? Groupon has come up with another way for bargain hunters to save money as the online coupon distributor prepares to raise money from wary investors.

The additional savings will be offered through a customer loyalty program that Groupon unveiled Wednesday.

Merchants who join the service can now set a spending target for customers to hit, after which they qualify for an even steeper discount than Groupon usually offers through the millions of daily deals it sells each week.

The new feature is meant to please consumers and merchants alike as Groupon tries to revive interest in its initial public offering of stock. The program launched Wednesday for merchants in the Philadelphia area, and consumers there will start getting the promotions Oct. 14.

The IPO had Wall Street buzzing when Groupon first filed its plan in early June because of the company's sizzling growth rate. But interest has waned amid doubts about Groupon's accounting, leadership and ability to maintain its lead in a market now drowning in daily deals.

After cutting its stated revenue by half last week, Groupon signaled it still intends to complete an IPO to raise up to $750 million. The company, which is based in Chicago, hasn't specified a timetable for pricing the IPO, but analysts now expect it to occur within the next month, unless the already shaky stock market gets even rockier.

If Groupon's new program works as company envisions, consumers who spend enough money to qualify would receive an 80 percent discount instead of the 50 percent markdown frequently given on its daily deals. For example, someone who spent $100 with a hair stylist might only need to spend another $20 to get the next $100 in service.

Merchants will have the final say on the size of the discounts.

Groupon's attempt to foster more customer loyalty addresses one of merchants' most common complaints about the daily deals on everything from manicures to meals. Many people who buy such deals redeem the coupons don't spend anything extra or return, leaving merchants with a loss after splitting the revenue with the coupon distributor.

Offering larger discounts to repeat customers is similar to the approach of one of Groupon's many rivals, LevelUp, which gives shoppers who make three visits to a merchant a better deal each time. Another competitor, BuyWithMe, launched its own rewards program this week. And still other services offer better discounts to customers who notify their online friends and followers that they are shopping at a certain store or eating at a particular restaurant.

Groupon is promoting its rewards program as the easiest because shoppers need only tie their spending to a single debit or credit card to start working toward a payoff from a merchant. The system also will make it simple for merchants to monitor customer loyalty, said Jeff Holden, Groupon's senior vice president of product.

Philadelphia is one of the first places LevelUp introduced its service this year.

Groupon's daily deals became so popular that Internet search leader Google Inc. unsuccessfully tried to buy the company last year for $6 billion. Google has since started its own deals service called "Offers" in an attempt to catch up to Groupon, which sold 32.5 million deals to 23 million customers in April through June alone.

Despite its popularity, Groupon hasn't been making money as management has focused on expanding into new markets. The company now offers deals in 175 North American markets and in 45 countries.

Groupon has lost a total of $623 million since its 2008 inception. Criticism of its accounting prompted Groupon to restate its revenue so it now cites only the amount of money it keeps from selling coupons. In the first six months of this year, Groupon now lists its revenue at $688 million, down from the previously reported $1.5 billion.

On the same day Groupon shaved its revenue, the company also revealed that its chief operating officer, Margo Georgiadis, had left the company after just four months to return to her former employer, Google.

Mac Miller Recruits Bro For Blue Slide Park Art

'I knew I wanted to do something with it that was more than just a picture of me,' Pittsburgh MC tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Oh to be a kid again! For his debut album, Blue Slide Park, Mac Miller is paying homage to his childhood stomping grounds of Pittsburgh. The LP cover is a simple, child-like rendition of the playground, drawn by the rapper's (born Malcolm McCormick) older brother, whose first name is actually Miller.

"I knew I wanted to do something with it that was more than just a picture of me," Mac told MTV News.

"Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at," Miller explained to us about the album title's significance. "Being 2, going down slides and then being 6, playing Little League and hanging out there, then being older, coming back there to drink and smoke and party, running from the cops. And now going back there just to chill out and drink a beer."

When Mac and his Most Dope team were seeking inspiration for the artwork, they consulted Google and came across a young girl's drawing, which they eventually used as a basis for the cover design. "We came across this 8-year-old's drawing and we were like, 'Yo, that is like the most simple but incredible thing ever; it's right to the point,' " he recalled. "Basically, the point is making something simple that can represent the whole idea. You look at it and it doesn't look like a park, but you know that's that Blue Slide Park."

The Blue Slide Cover is more Bob Ross than Rick Ross in its design. Deviating from more standard hip-hop cover art, the BSP front panel features a painting of multicolored triangles, with a big blue line right down the middle.

To execute his vision, rather than go with famed hip-hop photogs like Jonathan Mannion or Danny Clinch, Mac recruited his big brother. "He's always worked on art as long as I can remember," Mac said. "He draws all the time and he's getting into graphic design. If I can have my brother work on something for it, that's great."

Mac Miller's Blue Slide Park is due in stores November 8.

What do you think of Mac Miller's album cover? Tell us in the comments!

The Secrets to Successful Multilingual Social Media

Love it or hate it, social media has changed the way we interact, advertise and engage with our target markets. Even the chances that you made it to this article through social media are high ? a recent study found almost 9 in 10 businesses use social media for marketing purposes.

And why not? It?s free, it?s effective and you can reach people all over the world in a few simple clicks.

But to truly reach global markets, you need to speak their language, and there are a few essential tricks you need to know to make it in the heady world of multilingual social media.

Think like a local
To appeal to locals you?ve got to act like a local. Unfortunately this doesn?t mean swanning off round the world for many vacations (though that would be nice). What you will need to take into account is exactly where people are hanging out on the internet. You may have spent a lot of time and effort on smartening up your Facebook page, but consider that potential customers in a country like China (where Facebook is banned by their infamous censorship regime) won?t even be able to see it, even if you take the time to translate and localize it.

Instead of poking and liking each other, in China, QZone is home to 480 million Chinese-speaking members, while over in Brazil, orkut (incidentally owned by Google) is the favored social network for around 66 million active users. Portuguese use online has grown by 990% in the last eleven years, and can partly attribute its success to ever-increasing user numbers in Brazil?an emerging market that is proving popular with marketers world-wide.

Talk the lingo
While it?s a given that you need to speak to those overseas in their own language, sometimes this is easier said than done. The first step that many will take is to head straight to online free software like Google Translate or Babelfish. If you?re planning on doing this, do it with the knowledge that machine translation is rarely without errors. While it?s sophisticated technology indeed, it?s just not clever enough to be able to interpret slang, idioms or subtle linguistic nuances that come with, well, not being a machine. Many years ago Pepsi had a famous (and highly embarrassing) mistranslation when its ?Come alive with the Pepsi generation!? slogan allegedly translated in Chinese as ?Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead!?. Hiring a professional translator will eliminate any potential red-faced moments, as well as being able to help you localize.

Keep your messages relevant
Speaking of localization, if you?re going to broadcast your message across numerous languages to many different countries, you?re going to have to make sure your message is tailored to your audience and their locale. Nothing makes people reach for the ?Unfollow? button faster than having to read messages that just don?t apply to them. Remember that they?re reading your updates because they think you have something interesting to say, so keep them local! Follow their local news, keep up-to-date with industry gossip in your target language and avoid any cultural references (like celebrities, national holidays, TV shows etc) that might mean nothing in other countries?remember that while you sit down to a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, the rest of the world are in the office!

Management is Key
With so many different languages across social networks, it?s important you find a way to manage them all effectively. The first thing is to establish different accounts for different languages, as broadcasting your message in a dozen languages from the same feed is guaranteed to alienate your audience. Just take a look at any major corporation and see how they do it. Air France, for example has at least 13 different multilingual Twitter feeds (Here?s an interesting French fact: you?re not allowed to mention Twitter on the TV in France).

Remember time zones too?while you might have that Friday feeling, it?s already Saturday in Japan. There are some great tools like Hootsuite that allow you to schedule Tweets to be sent whenever you choose, so you can target the right people at the right times.

Talk back
Once you?ve got going, you need to keep up the momentum. Don?t be daunted when your followers/fans/customers start talking to you in a language you don?t understand. If it helps, you can use machine translation to get the gist of what they?re saying, and respond in an appropriate manner, using the same method you do to translate your social network updates in the first place. If you?ve got the resources, it can really be an advantage here to have a native-speaking staff member on your books, as they can respond in a timely (and accurate!) manner.

Taking your social media multilingual can be a scary thought, but with a little planning and expertise, it can really open up a world of opportunity for you and your business? and we certainly all ?like? that.

Wanda Sykes undergoes treatment for cancer (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Comedienne and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star Wanda Sykes tells Ellen DeGeneres on Monday's "Ellen" show that a decision earlier this year to have a breast reduction surgery may have saved her life.

Sykes tells DeGeneres that while lab work was being performed after her breast reduction, doctors discovered she had DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), a stage zero cancer, which prompted her to opt for a bilateral mastectomy, or a double mastectomy, to head off any further development of the disease.

The procedure is the same surgery "Up All Night" star Christina Applegate underwent in 2008 after being diagnosed with breast cancer and testing positive for BRCA, the "breast cancer gene."

"Do you want to wait and not be as fortunate when it comes back and it's too late?" Sykes said.

"I was very, very lucky. I had the choice of, you can go back every three months and get it checked. Have a mammogram, MRI every three months just to see what it's doing. But I'm not good at keeping on top of stuff. I'm sure I'm overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already. I have a lot of breast cancer history on my mother's side of the family, which I didn't know about."

Sykes, who's currently on a stand-up comedy tour and will perform at the New York Comedy Festival in November, joked to DeGeneres that she kept her cancer diagnosis hush hush -- the "Ellen" show appearance is the first time she's discussed it publicly -- because she didn't want to become the cancer "poster child."

"How many things could I have? I'm black, then lesbian," she joked. "I can't be the poster child for everything! At least with the LGBT issues we get a parade, we get a float, it's a party. I was real hesitant about doing this because, I hate walking. I got a lot of walks coming up!"

Hints of universal behavior seen in exotic 3-atom states

Friday, September 23, 2011

A novel type of inter-particle binding predicted in 1970 and observed for the first time in 2006, is forming the basis for an intriguing kind of ultracold quantum chemistry. Chilled to nano-kelvin temperatures, cesium atoms---three at a time---come together to form a bound state hundreds or even thousands of times larger than individual atoms. Unlike the case of ordinary atoms, wherein electrons are bound to a nucleus in a spectrum of energy levels on the order of an electron volt (that is, it would typically take an eV of energy to free the electron), the cesium triplets feature energy levels that are measured in trillionths of an electron volt (peV). Stranger still, a new experiment observing four such cesium states reports that the states' sizes are roughly the same. This has taken theorists by complete surprise.

In the seventeenth century Isaac Newton derived the classical force laws used to calculate the force between two objects. Calculating the behavior of three-body groupings such as the Moon/Earth/Sun system was much harder; indeed Newton never succeeded. Nowadays such problems can be studied with powerful computers, but only numerical simulations are possible, and not exact, analytical solutions.

In 1970, however, Russian physicist Vitaly Efimov predicted that under some special conditions, three bodies, such as atoms at ultralow temperatures, could be made to enter into stable states whose behavior could be calculated with remarkable ease. Then in 2006 exactly such states were actually observed by scientists at the University of Innsbruck. Now, these researchers have extended their work and demonstrated that the "three-body parameter," used to describe how the three participating bodies interact, varies in a consistent way regardless of the atomic species used.

Paul Julienne, a scientist at the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI), operated by the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), contributed theoretical help to the Innsbruck scientists conducting the experiment, a team led by Rudolf Grimm. "None of the experts in three-body physics had expected this kind of universal behavior to show up in these 3-atom systems," Julienne said. "This behavior came as a big surprise." And the universality, in turn, might suggest the existence of some new kind of ultracold chemistry at work.

Efimov's 1970 work met with much skepticism, especially since his prediction specified that three particles could form stable partnerships even though none of the two-particle matchups were stable. That is, 3 particles could accomplish what 2 particles could not. This novel arrangement has been compared to the "Borromean Rings," a set of three rings used on heraldic symbol for the Borromeo family during the Italian Renaissance. The three rings hold together unless any one of the rings is removed.

Efimov's prediction applies not just to atoms but to any 3 particles. For example, helium-6, a semi-stable nucleus consisting of 2 protons and 4 neutrons, can be made by from a helium-4 nucleus and 2 extra neutrons. The 2 neutrons cannot form a stable composite; neither can He-4 plus 1 extra neutron. But the three-body He4-n-n system is stable, at least for a while.

Such Borromean nuclei have been known for some time, but atoms have turned out to be more useful in pursuing the novel interactions called for in Efimov's theory. That's because atoms can be chilled to nano-kelvin temperatures in traps and made to interact with great precision. As atoms cool down, they get larger---at least in a quantum sense: as waves, their equivalent wavelength can be many times larger than their nominal particle size (a hydrogen atom is about 0.1 nm across). Furthermore, by applying an external magnetic field, subtle interactions among neutral atoms can be achieved.

Such interactions, called Feshbach resonances, were used to bring cesium atoms together, three at a time, in Efimov states. These atoms were part of a vapor held at temperatures of tens of nano-K. In 2006 the Innsbruck team reported seeing one such troika of atoms. Now, in the 16 September 2011 issue of Physical Review Letters, the Innsbruck-JQI-Durham researchers are reporting the observation of three more state of 3 atoms bound together.

These trimers are quantum objects; they have no classical counterpart. The weak binding of the super-cold Cs atoms is described in terms of a parameter, a, called the scattering length. If a is positive and large (much larger than the nominal range of the force between the atoms), weak binding of atoms can happen. If a is negative, a slight attraction of two atoms can occur but not binding. If, however, a is large, negative, and three atoms are present, then the Efimov state can appear. Indeed an infinite number of such states can occur. The Efimov state has an energy spectrum, as if it were a chemical element all by itself, with each binding energy level scaling with the value of a. This kind of universal behavior was expected.

The effective size of these Efimov-triplets is referred to as the three-body parameter. In the case of the four cesium states seen so far, the value is just about the same, about 50 nm, or about 500 times the size of a hydrogen atom. This, combined with the three-body-parameter values observed in experiments for lithium and possibly for other elements being studied right now, suggests that while adjusting for the size of the respective atoms all the species are behaving in the same way. This kind of universality was totally unexpected.

"It is really amazing how the new research field developed since we found the first traces of Efimov states, "said Grimm. "Now things have become reality, things we did not even dream about five years ago."

Home Improvement | Your Garage Is A Solution For Storage Ideas ...

A garage doesn?t have to be a recycling centre in miniature. Instead, it can be an inspiring addition to the home where work or hobbies are carried out.

Believe It Or Not

The Chinese art and science of Feng Shui is based on the theory that balancing the energies of any given space can help assert the fortunes and health of those who live there. Whether you are a believer or not, there is something to be said for applying the basics of this system to your garage. A good spring clean can not only maximize your garage storage, but also transform the space into an environment suitable for a number of other activities.

A Clean Start

The most efficient way of seeing just how much space you are not using effectively is to give your garage a much-needed clear out. While this may require some effort, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

To begin, you need to prepare basic storage solutions. This means finding any storage boxes or bins you might have and giving them a rigorous clean. Not only will this inspire you to clean or mend anything you put in them, it will also help to protect your items against damage such as rust or staining. Once you have cleaned your storage equipment, line them up outside your garage, bearing in mind that there is always the possibility that you may need to buy more.

The next stage is possibly the most difficult, but also the most liberating. Garages often become receptacles for household storage, acting as the final resting place for items that have seen better days. If possible, assemble all your items in the centre of the garage and begin to sort through them. You should have three categories in mind for each item - keep, repair or bin (or in our more environmentally aware times, reuse, repair and recycle). As a guideline to help you make your decision, consider just how much you have needed or used the item in the last year. If the answer is little or none, then the item should be thrown away or recycled. Items needing repair should be put in a container marked ?For Repair?. Signs such as these often inspire us to carry out mundane tasks when we have little else to do. The items that you know you will need or absolutely cannot do without should be placed in the containers you have earlier cleaned. There is no need to mark them just yet; you will develop your own filing system according to what you have and can mark them later. The key here, though, is to be ruthless. If you don?t need it, don?t keep it.

Ace the Space

Once you have stored the items you are keeping, it is time to look at the space itself. It is certainly worth cleaning out cobwebs and dirt, but it may also be worth applying a lick of paint. Consider the space in the same way you might consider any room in the house. What do I want to use this room for and how can I achieve the right effect? Now is also the time to consider storage solutions, whether that?s mobile storage shelves, tool storage units or any of the storage systems available. Consider the space on the wall and on the ceiling. If it can be used, you will only gain more space and be able to access the essentials with greater ease.

Fill the Space

Once you have implemented all the storage solutions on your list, you can begin to reorganize your space. However, leave your ?For Repair? items in their container. Once you have found new homes for all your other items, you may find that you are inspired to further your home organization and begin the necessary repairs. Once you have done so, these items can be moved back into the house or installed in their rightful places, giving you even more space to play with.

los-angeles-nfl-stadium-e1312984478397

As AEG?s proposed stadium, which would be built in downtown Los Angeles, continues to systematically clear a long string of hurdles, the folks behind the competing project in the City of Industry continue to push their proposal forward.

As recently reported by the Whittier Daily News, a group of former NFL players, state officials, and local officials recently spoke out in favor of the City of Industry venue, which would be built by Ed Roski.? They made their case at a meeting of the Four Corners Coalition, a nonprofit group that supports projects that benefit Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in California.

?This is the perfect area and location for a stadium, because this is where the people live,? San Bernardino County Supervisor Gary Ovitt said.? ?If I had a choice between driving downtown on a Sunday and watching the game in my home, guess what?? I?m going to stay home; most people would.?

The former NFL players who appeared at the event included Marvin Smith, Reggie Berry, C.R. Roberts, Amon Arnold, Frank Rice, Ron Brown and Steve Wright.? Smith pointed to the fact that the City of Industry site permits traditional tailgating.

?I just think tailgating is a great experience, and I can?t wait to take my son to a tailgate party since I can?t play anymore,? Smith said.

Still, Roski?s proposal faces an uphill climb, even though it?s shovel-ready.? The NFL is believed to prefer the glitz of a downtown stadium.

Exercise, an opportunity to meet new people, and an evening of fun all for a very reasonable cost ? that's what the Leduc Recreational Badminton Club is offering Leduc and area residents.

"When it's -40 degrees Celsius outside playing badminton is a good way to get exercise inside," explained Lawrence Ong, member and one of the organizers of the club.

The club is open up to those 12-years-old and older and is made for any and all skill levels.

"Our youngest player is 12 and our oldest member is 74, so anyone can play," said Ong.

The season began on Sept. 21 and will run until the third week of May. The club plays at the Leduc Composite High School (LCHS) at Gym "B" every Wednesday night during the season from 7-9 p.m.

This is the fifth year the badminton club has been running in Leduc, but this is the first year Ong has decided to take it over and is hoping that this year more people will come out and play.

"We're hoping to get the interest out there for people to come and play once a week at the high school," added Ong.

If enough interest is generated, the club will look into adding another night to play, said Ong.

Not only does the sport of badminton test one's physical prowess, but it is also a very mentally tough game.

Games are set up as to how many people show up each week and those who do take part will have the opportunity to play quite a bit, added Wong.

"We're rarely sitting down. We're usually playing quite a bit."

The club is also a good opportunity for those who are new to the community and are looking to meet new people and acquaintances.

"It's a great way to meet new people, get exercise and form new friendships," stated Ong.

The cost for the entire season is $75 for adults, $40 for those 12-16 years of age, $180 for a family (two adults and two children). Considering how long the season is, it is only $3 a night when an adult purchases a season pass.

To drop in one night and try the sport out, the cost is $5 per person or for youth aged 12-16 years of age, the cost is $3.00 per person.

Bayimba uplifts culture, the arts ? In2EastAfrica ? All East African ...

About 10,000 revellers stormed Uganda National Cultural Centre ? National Theatre, for the fourth edition of the Bayimba International Festival of the Arts. More than 100 different artistes graced the main and hip-hop stages, auditorium, open space, dance floor, Green Room and the VIP tent in the three-day festival that will be remembered for the sheer number of people fascinated by free entry. And a lot more.

In a manifestation of how much the arts in Uganda have grown, the festival was a celebration of everything from photography, theatre, film, music to poetry and fashion. According to Faisal Kiwewa, the director, this edition shows that Ugandan arts is vibrant and has moved on to another level.

?When we traversed the country, we found many talented people. We found musicians who can hold their own and sing live,? he said. That is why 80 per cent of the artistes were from Uganda. The rest were from East Africa and the rest of the world. ?The different artistes, especially those that graced the main stage, did so live. No CDs.?

That is the reason why probably their mission to uplift arts and culture (specifically visual and performing arts) in Uganda and East Africa by stimulating original intra- and interdisciplinary cultural exchange and creativity is on course to realisation.
The Uneven Band, Kwella Band, Josephine Nabitaka Ndagire, Theatre Factory, Fred Ssebata, Ssali Hytham, Tshilla, Maraka Band, Lillian and the Sundowners, Navio and Benon ? who were accompanied by the Kampala Symphony Orchestra rocked. These were complemented by foreign acts Donna Michelle, Ana Lan and Muzungu Kicha.

Others on the line up never showed up, like Rachael K who was scheduled to perform on Friday. Maybe she was still recovering from a stinging remark from a colleague about last year?s performance. With much better weather this rainy September, most artistes had a chance of making an impact on the crowds, but instead drove them away to other activities like the silent disco, poetry, art exhibition and plays in the auditorium. The younger ones bounced their happiness away in the ?castles?.

The future of the festival right now is bright even with the minimal support from the so called corporate companies that according to Kiwewa, only support anything without a vision. ?Four stages, more artistes and more people is what we are looking for at next year?s edition,? Kiwewa says.

The magic of the festival that started on March 26 in Jinja and went through Arua, Gulu, Mbarara, Mbale and ended with a three-day fiesta is still intact. The sound, which occasionally gave way as the artistes performed on the main stage was probably the only glitch of the show. That, and Charlie, the MC?s outfit. But without doubt this will go down as a good festival for all the right reasons.
