Electrical Contractors for Home Improvement Projects

While some people live in newer homes that boast the latest floor plan designs, lighting fixtures, appliances and more, many other people live in homes that are older in age. Older homes may have a certain character and charm that newer homes often lack, but they do have their downsides. As a home ages, its floor plan can become outdated and not suitable for the functional use of a family. The fixtures in a home can further date the home. If you are looking around your home today and want to make some changes to modernize the look of your space, you many need the services of electrical contractors.

Updated Lighting Beyond the flooring, paint color on the walls and the furniture inside a home, there are few things that make a home look old-fashioned and dated more easily than the lighting. Light fixtures are often installed when a home is built, and they often are not replaced for many years or even decades. What was fashionable ten or twenty years ago is simply not fashionable today. With this in mind, you can use the services of electrical contractors to replace the light fixtures throughout your home. Consider using these services for replacing outdoor lighting, that large chandelier in the foyer, ceiling fans in the bedrooms and light fixtures throughout the home. New lights can be added where there are none, and fixtures can also be removed if you find their presence pointless.

Room Additions and Expansions If your home improvement and remodeling efforts are more expansive in scope, you can use electrical services from a licensed contractor for room additions and expansions. Many existing walls contain wiring for electrical outlets, lighting, appliances and more. When you move a wall for expansion or addition purposes, these wires will need to be moved. Further, new wiring will need to be installed in the new space. An electrician contractor can provide you with assistance in these efforts.

Added Functionality If you are like most people, you use electricity for everything from vacuuming the floor and making coffee in the morning to watching TV and working on your computer. You require electrical outlets, lighting and more in every room of your home. Of course, the outlets and fixtures that were installed years ago may not be suitable for your current needs. An electrician can be called to your home for minor projects, such as adding a new outlet so that you don't need an extension cord. An electrician's services can also be used to move appliances to a new area of the home, to add overhead lighting in rooms where you currently only have floor lamps or other purposes. An older home can lack the function that a modern lifestyle demands, but electrician services can correct those issues in your home.

You may call an electrical professional to your home today for minor needs, or you may create a list of "to do" items for a contractor to assist you with during one specific visit.

Mr. Electric 2446 Bank Street #629 Ottawa, ON K1V 1A8?, provides professional and highly experienced electricians to solve any electrical problems. http://ottawa.mrelectric.com

Plaintiffs in Texas' pending school finance lawsuit represent 2/3rds ...

Houston lawyer David Thompson, who knows more about school finance than just about anybody in Texas, led a delegation to visit the DMN editorial board today. The subject was the pending school funding lawsuit that a state district court is slated to hear in Austin in late October.

I will blog later about some of the issues that Thompson presented, but the fact that really got my attention was this one: The plaintiffs in the suit represent about 600 school districts, or about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of all Texas students.

That staggering number may have no legal bearing. But if the vast majority of kids in Texas schools are in districts that are protesting the way the state funds schools that says something about the widespread nature of Texas? school funding challenges.

Thompson says never before have so many districts or kids been represented in such a case in Texas. Perhaps judges aren?t supposed to be swayed by such data, but it sure stood out to me. There are complicated legal questions involved in all this, but clearly school funding is a problem that affects many districts and students. ?This is not an isolated problem that affects only rich or poor districts, who have normally been the key players in school finance suits in Texas.

Musings from the last little bird: Self Publishing in New Zealand - To ...

Why Am I Self Publishing?

I've wanted to be an author all my life. If you've been following this blog at all (which I haven't been stellar at keeping alive, I do admit) you will have seen me transition from flitting about, from career to career, and gradually grow more serious about writing.
It's very difficult to make a living through creative writing alone. Perhaps almost impossible. I'm extremely lucky that I have a very supportive family and no major obligations (like children or a mortgage) to stand in my, no doubt poverty-stricken, way.
So I have to make a confession right up front.

The Money

I am self publishing, in part, because I hope it will mean another source of income that I can take advantage of in the next year or so. If you put your work at the right price point on Amazon, you are entitled to 70% royalties. Even if you don't, the average seems to be about 35%. That can add up. Particularly when you compare it to the percentage trade publishers generally offer (off the top of my head, I think it's between 8% and 12%. E-publishers often offer royalties on a par with self publishing, so don't rule them out on royalties alone).
However, money is a terrible reason to self publish.
Most people who self publish will not see much money from their work at all. After they've tapped out the market made up of friends and family, their work will languish in the depths of Amazon forever. Promotion is not a magic wand. Quality is not a guarantee.
Of course, the same is true of someone who publishes with a trade publisher, but in that case you most likely at least got an advance and professional promotions, as well as your book sitting in actual bookstores.

So why do I think I will be different? I don't. I'm gambling here, to some extent, and I'll tell you why.

Speed and Quantity Counts

I am a very fast writer when I want to be. My output isn't huge at the moment, although it's not bad, but it's as low as it is because I'm lazy. And it's rising.
I've had years to develop the bad habits I've got and I'm slowly trying to get rid of them now. I'm learning to make myself excited to write and dedicated to learning the craft.
But, if I light a fire under my own tail, I can get things done. I mucked around for months, thinking I should put something out there before really deciding to go with it. I've had an idea for years that would fit a series of novellas beautifully, about a young man who is really good at problem solving and is travelling around some strange islands doing just that.
About a month ago, I finally decided to really get to it and I finished the second half of the first novella in the series within a single weekend. When I finally crank myself up, I'll hopefully be able to do around one novella per month.
No, they are not works of literary genius. They are, hopefully, fun to read.
And from what I've seen, being able to crank out a lot of books? in a short time works to your advantage when self publishing. I can't imagine many publishers being happy to publish one book per month for you (except whoever published the Goosebumps series perhaps!), but having a huge backlist available when self publishing online is what helps people to make a living. With such a low price point, and no problems with delivery or storage, if someone likes one of your books there's no reason not to buy all the rest right then and there.
(I think I should point out here that of course, there is always the option to self publish paper books as well as the e-books I'm going to harp on about, but they are not something I've given much thought to yet as they are a much bigger investment in time and money when it comes to self publishing).

Size Matters

You'll notice I said novella and not novel. Perhaps I could have crammed my series of novellas into a single full sized novel, but I like the way it breathes at the moment. However, if I wanted to get it published by a publishing house, even an e-publishing house, I'm fresh out of luck. There are very few places that will take works of this size and subject matter (i.e. non-romance, approx 37,000 words) and most of the ones that might take it are fairly new and untested. They still might be a good option, if I wasn't happy to do all this work myself and I do think longingly of them at times.
At any rate, if I self publish, I don't have to worry about size. People have been self publishing even short stories to some success. My novella looks positively gargantuan in comparison.

Promotion

I am fairly well versed in the internet and in social media. I know how SEO works and what spamming is and so forth.
I'm not sure if promotion is a reason to self publish (it seems like it's going to be a pain in the arse, frankly) but it's not a reason to not self publish, at any rate.

Some other reasons for self publishing that I've seen people mention are:
Wanting to have control over your cover and the rest of the process.
Wanting to have control over the rights to your book.
Wanting to undercut the big publishers.
Wanting to see results quickly.
Being unable to get your book placed with an agent or publisher.
Writing a niche topic that probably isn't commercially viable for a publisher.
Knowing you've already got a ready-made audience and wanting to cash in on that, rather than share the profits.

There are probably more that I haven't seen or thought of. If you have another reason, by all means leave it in the comments!

I've got other novels in mind, or even half started, that I will eventually send out to agents and publishers. I have the book of poems that I completed last year (which still needs work) which I intend to send out as well. I am not putting all my eggs in one basket, so to speak.
But I'm excited about this experiment. I loved writing this fun little book. And I'm hoping other people will like it too.

Next post I'm going to talk about the bits of self publishing that I could do without.

OS X Mountain Lion now available in the Mac App Store, and what it means for iOS users

Mountain Lion, Apple's next generation desktop OS is now available for $19.99 -- here's what it means to iOS users, and for Windows users thinking of switching

OS X Mountain Lion, the 8th generation of Apple's desktop operating system and the elder brother with which iOS shares much of it's digital DNA, is now available in the Mac App Store.

Most iOS users still use Windows as their primary desktop operating system. Even as the iPad is replacing traditional, lower-level desktop tasks like email, web browsing, and gaming for more and more of the mainstream, when it comes to proper old operating systems, Microsoft is still king.

Yet Apple's choosing an incredibly interesting way to try and change that, at least for the users it cares about most. No, not you, geeky gaming rig guy in the basement. No, not you beleaguered beige box guy in the cubicle. No, not even you, media server maven guy with your house all wired. With Mountain Lion, as with Lion before it, targets the casual user -- that very same mainstream user who's gotten an iPad for many things, but still needs a traditional computer for some things. A car driver looking for a familiarly appointed truck.

Familiarity is the key. Familiarity is a feature. Though they share many of the same underpinnings, OS X and iOS are very different animals. (One's a big cat, for starters.) Yet Apple understands that, for the user, the interface and the experience is the app. So with Mountain Lion, they've made more of the OS X interface and experience more closely match iOS than ever. Which makes sense, given the iOS user base not only dwarfs the OS X user base, but consists of the very users Apple wants to reach most -- those for whom traditional computers have always been inaccessible, intimidating, and off-putting.

$19.99 - Download now

Setup and iCloud

OS X Mountain Lion now sets up similarly to iOS 5 -- you enter your iCloud-associated Apple ID and almost everything gets done for you. It's not quite that simple of course, at least not yet, but it's vastly better than computers of even a few years ago.

You still have to choose or take a profile picture, which is irksome to those of us who've used Macs with .Mac and MobileMe for years, and iCloud now, who'd really love to have the option to use our existing iCloud avatar. You also still have to fill out registration information. iOS skips both these steps, and for the better.

Once you're done you're done and in, however, and everything that syncs between your iOS devices also syncs between your iOS devices and Macs. (Apple technically doesn't use sync for iCloud but "store and push".)

All your stuff is "just there", and because Apple has made OS X apps sound, look, and even feel more like iOS apps, all your stuff is easy to find as well.

Built-in apps

With OS X Mountain Lion, Apple has continued to bring iOS concepts "back to the Mac" with mostly good, and in some cases excellent results.

Calendars & Contacts

Gone are the iCal and Address Book of old, and in their place are Calendar and Contacts, just like iOS. They got an iPad-style makeover last year with OS X Lion, so this year the name is the biggest change. It may not seem like a big deal, but for an iOS user it makes them instantly recognizable and referable across Apple's platforms.

Messages

Likewise, iChat has become Messages... and is more problematic. iMessage delivered a much-needed roshambo to the carrier price gouge that was SMS, and worked in a similar fashion. It was in context. It was understood. Even on the iPad, iMessages made some sense, even if dual-wielders had to put up with dual accounts (phone number for iPhone, Apple ID for iPad and iPod touch) -- and dual alarms! (iOS 6 will fix this by allowing phone numbers and Apple IDs to be merged for iMessage and FaceTime.) On OS X, however, the iMessage/iChat hybrid is messy.

On one hand, if you're working on the Mac, it's faster to respond to iMessages on the Mac than to switch devices and do it on the iPhone or iPad. On the other, holy triple beeping hell, Batman. I've turned off alerts for iMessage on everything but my iPhone, since it's always with me. That way I only get one notification, but can reply from the device of my choosing. A more elegant solution from Apple, however, awaits.

Notes & Reminders

Added to the built in OS X app suite are Notes and Reminders, which now exist and do on OS X what they done on iOS since versions 1 and 5 respectively. They're no more or less than any iOS user would expect, but being able to expect them on the desktop as well as mobile is significant.

Safari

Safari, meanwhile, has lost the separate search field and now has a unified bar for URL entry and search. Google Chrome pioneered this and Apple has copied it, no doubt to delight of many. I've never been a huge fan but I've gotten used to it, and it's nice to have Safari and Chrome on the same page for those of us who switch frequently between them.

Also gone, to my immense consternation, is Safari RSS. Not just the ability to use Safari as an RSS reader gone (which was handy on occasion), you can't even open an RSS file to look at. Apple tells you to go jump in the Mac App Store and buy an app. Removing RSS from public view is one thing. Preventing your web browser from opening files is another. For shame.

On the plus side, Apple has given Safari for Mac the outstanding Action button from iOS, so you can easily share a web page in a variety of ways. I used to close my Mac and pick up my iPad just to share links in a non-frustrating way. Now, if I happen to be on my Mac, it's just as easy as if I was on iOS.

Also like Chrome, iCloud will now sync your tabs between OS X and iOS, so you can leave home with a web page loaded, and keep up with it on the go. Or vice-versa. Just make sure, if anyone else has access to you Mac or iPad at home or at work, you stick to tabs you're comfortable with everyone seeing you have open.

Yeah.

Notifications

Notification Center has moved from iOS to OS X and... actually works better on OS X. In iOS, Apple copied the base functionality of Google's pre-Android 4.1 notification window shade, but hasn't gone much beyond that. Rollovers still block buttons, and annoyingly to designers, linen appears in an overlay interface element rather than a background element. On Mountain Lion, a two finger swipe from the right edge of the trackpad moves the desktop aside to reveal Notification Center behind it. Notification appear as overlays at the top right of the screen and are even less obtrusive than they are on iOS.

They're still not actionable, however, and that's where Apple is behind Android today, and webOS from years ago. Hopefully that's addresses in a future version. Having a notification appear and being able to quickly adjust controls or jot down a response without switching apps is the way it's meant to be done.

AirPlay and Game Center

The single biggest feature for me in Mountain Lion is AirPlay. Anyone who owns a Mac and an Apple TV will instantly attach to AirPlay on OS X because, like me, they will have wanted it forever. To be able to play any video on your Mac, or view any screen, and at the click of a menu button have it instantly beamed to the big screen TV is one of the Holy Grails of geekdom. And for the most part, it works great.

One of the other Holy Grails (greeks are demanding, we have several), is cross-platform gaming. Mountain Lion provides that as well, with Game Center moving from iOS to OS X. If the same game is available on both desktop and mobile, and it's integrated into Game Center, you can race between iPod touch and Mac as easily as you could shoot between iPhone and iPad last week. It has its quirks, and it might take a while for developers to truly nail the experience between their apps, but it's fantastic.

If anyone had any reason to even consider not getting Mountain Lion, AirPlay and Game Center should have you clicking away your $19.99 right now.

Note: Some older Intel Macs won't get AirPlay in the update, which is beyond annoying.

Twitter and Facebook

If you use them, Apple has integrated Twitter and Facebook into Mountain Lion. Since Apple has struggled with their own social networks, and appears to have no interest in owning social the way they own the core OS and cloud, it was a good choice, and works well enough.

Gate Keeper

Previously, OS X on the Mac was the polar opposite of iOS when it came to how you could install and run apps. On iOS, unless you jailbreak, the App Store and the App Store alone is where you get your apps. With OS X Lion last year, Apple introduced the Mac App Store, but left the traditional, 3rd party vendor system in place and untouched as well. And yeah, phew.

However, the iOS approach is safer, easier, more secure, and carries other benefits, especially for a mainstream customer. So with OS X Mountain Lion, Apple is giving users a choice. Well, three choices actually.

  1. Only allow apps to be installed and run from the Mac App Store
  2. Only allow apps to be installed and run from the Mac App Store and signed, certified developers.
  3. Allow any apps from anywhere to run.

It's a model many have wanted on iOS, even if it's unlikely Apple would ever do it. (There aren't many iOS apps that Apple would allow under Gatekeeper that they wouldn't already allow under the App Store -- no system modifications, for example, would get through either.)

For those who are internet savvy and fancy free, option 3 means the Mac will behave as it always have. For those for whom software on the desktop has always been a scary mess, option 1 makes it as close to iOS as possible. If not win/win, it's absolutely tie/tie.

Dictation

There's no Siri in OS X yet, but like the new iPad with iOS 5.1, there is Dictation. For those of us who've grown lazy typing thanks to Siri and Dictation, that's welcome news.

Upgrade advise

I'm not sure OS X is similar enough to iOS that I can recommend everything go out an update immediately, like most of us do with iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. Computers are trickier beasts with more moving parts. If you aren't a comfortable, confident, early adapter (who is likely already on a pre-release version.), wait a while. Wait a day or a week until any problems have been identified and fixed. Wait a month or more if you have mission critical software that you can't have fail on a new OS.

Apple is on yearly OS X update cycles now, just like iOS, but the same old computer advice applies: slow and steady wins the reliability race.

Conclusion

Apple touts over 200 new features in Mountain Lion, including many specifically for the growing Chinese market. For me, it's not the number that matters but the nature. Making OS X look and feel more like iOS is a smart play by Apple. Previously, anyone getting into the Apple ecosystem via an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad might have looked at a Mac and seen something just as alien as a Windows PC. Now they'll see something just as familiar as their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Now, there's actually a reason iOS users, especially mainstream ones who are new to or have never been comfortable with traditional computers, to choose Mac over Windows -- it feels like just one more iOS device, a more capable if complicated one. It feels like a nicely appointed, leather stitched, linen-lined truck.

Sure, some element of the market has always had a compelling reason to choose Mac -- it was prettier or friendlier or simply fit the way they worked better. But many didn't. Many went with Windows for reasons every bit as legitimate to their feelings and needs.

Apple may not convert many more Windows devotees to Mac with Mountain Lion, but they'll convert or simply attract a great percentage of those who previously had no strong loyalty one way or another. They'll get the iOS using mainstream, and that's good for both Apple and mainstream computer users or users-to-be.

I had my mom try it out this weekend -- my version of the ultimate usability test -- and even though she's been using Lion for year, she found it immediately more relatable simply by virtue of the similar apps. That's no doubt what Apple was going for, and what they've achieved.

And for those worried that Apple is "dumbing down" the Mac for iOS users -- you still have Terminal. You're fine.

Why You Should Check Out Tennessee's Real Estate: Land for Sale in

Buying land is no small matter since it involves a lot of money. Before making any final decision, you should always consult with others and do some research of your own. Having a definite motivation behind your need to purchase a specific piece of real estate can be helpful.

Many professionals on the field of finance and real estate say that it is best to rent what you are planning to buy for a time period before making a final decision. This allows you to acclimatize or to know the area better. A good example would be a person from California who plans to move to Tennessee.

The historically destructive atomic bomb was developed in this state and the Ku Klux Clan was also known to originate from here. Knowing facts like these can easily shoo away potential land buyers. But as you rent a home in Tennessee and get cozy for a few months, you begin to enjoy the city?s sights, sounds, food, and people.

You can understand the resale value of the land you are trying to buy by familiarizing yourself first with the area. Don?t make city resale rates your basis since in the country it would typically be lower. If you plan to re-sell the land in the future you should not expect high appreciation which is typical of cities because this does not usually apply to rural areas.

Also, imagine what kind of life awaits you as you ultimately move to your new property. Look at the type of living situation you would be providing for yourself and your family and see if it fits your future plans. There is cheap land for sale in Tennessee which is attractive to many real estate agents since the place offers a high quality of life but a low cost of living.

As supported by the Council for Community and Economic Research, Tennessee cities have a particularly low cost of living and it typically costs 10 percent less than living anywhere else in the country. You can save 10% on food, transportation fares, clothing, food, utility fees and many others. It?s no surprise that more and more Americans are moving in.

The state is known for a few national landmarks, which include the Mississippi River. You would be lucky to live close to the numerous mountain ranges, farmlands, rolling hills and valleys that sprinkle the state. The famous city of Nashville is also a must-see because of its cultural significance and beautiful scenery.

You would also see that it is easy to drive around and go to major cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis which are all close by. Where the land is located will always be the foremost consideration in the process of buying land. The property?s proximity to hospitals, airports, major highways, shopping centers and more will always be looked into.

You may even ask about zoning plans at the local government offices. The offices concerned could tell you if the area would be developed or if there are no pending projects for the property. You will also be informed what kind of home or building you will be allowed to construct.

When you are considering Tennessee land for sale as the site for your home you should look at 3 things. One of the many reasons why living in Tennessee is significantly cheaper is the fact that they don?t require property tax or state personal income tax. The state is ideal for its clean air, considerably less traffic, more open spaces and natural landscapes to enjoy. Interested about land for sale in Tennessee? Learn more here to know more.

Syria Chemical Weapons Only For Foreign Attack Defense, Says Regime

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- The Syrian regime acknowledged for the first time Monday that it possessed stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons and said it will only use them in case of a foreign attack and never internally against its own citizens .

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the stockpiles are secure, in an apparent response to widespread international concerns that they could fall into the hands of the disparate bands of rebel forces fighting the government.

"No chemical or biological weapons will ever be used, and I repeat, will never be used, during the crisis in Syria no matter what the developments inside Syria," he said in conference broadcast on state TV. "All of these types of weapons are in storage and under security and the direct supervision of the Syrian armed forces and will never be used unless Syria is exposed to external aggression."

Syria is believed to have nerve agents as well as mustard gas, Scud missiles capable of delivering these lethal chemicals and a variety of advanced conventional arms, including anti-tank rockets and late-model portable anti-aircraft missiles.

Israel has said it fears that chaos following Assad's fall could allow the Jewish state's enemies, to access Syria's chemical weapons and has not ruled out military intervention to prevent this from happening.

A senior U.S. intelligence official said the Syrians have moved chemical weapons material from the northern end of the country, where the fighting was fiercest, apparently to both secure it, and to consolidate it, which U.S. officials considered a responsible step.

But there has also been a disturbing rise in activity at all the installations, so the U.S. intelligence community is intensifying its monitoring efforts to track the weapons and try to figure out whether the Syrians are trying to use them, the official said. A surge of satellite mapping was evidenced by the release of dozens of unclassified images of Syria on Friday.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the still-evolving investigation.

I am going to give you some links that may help you out on the site. The RPG User Manual will give you some basic info on the site and how to use it and the Rules are short, sweet and to the point.

Once you get familiarized with the place, I'd suggest going to either the Interest Checks thread or the Roleplayers Wanted thread. Interest checks are for people looking to gather people for a roleplay that's in its planning stages and Roleplayers Wanted is a thread looking for people to join a RP that has already been created but simply needs more people!

I have to be honest and say that I despise wolves. Well, perhaps not despise but out of all of my fears wolves definitely ranks up there near spiders and small, enclosed spaces for me. I think it stemmed from watching The Neverending Story at a tender young age. The Nothing was a scary SOB.

Hope you find some amazing roleplays on the site! If you need anything, just ask or Private Message!

VIDEO: Ernie Els Blows Off Canada, Praises Nelson Mandela In Speech After Winning 2012 British Open

One of the few things better than Ernie Els's great comeback at the 2012 British Open in Sunday's final round was the meaty chunk of his speech shortly after winning. During said speech, he went from making the crowd chuckle at Canada's expense to giving praise to Nelson Mandela for uniting his native South Africa as quick as a wink.

Els on Canada, sort of:

I want to try and come and see (my family in London) this evening. I was supposed to go to Canada, but I think I'm going to blow that thing off. I'll have to come see you guys, and maybe get to Canada on Tuesday.

Els was referring to the RBC Canadian Open, which begins Thursday in Ancaster, Ontario.

He immediately went on to thank Mandela.

"I've got to thank, obviously, first of all, you know, President Mandela, who's been such a great influence in our country. We have been truly blessed to have a man like President Mandela take us through a very difficult time in our country. And everybody now, we can see the success of the country, now, and it's only because of President Mandela.

Comments like those are part of what has made Els one of the most beloved golfers in the world.

Generosity greatly changes fortunes of bullied bus monitor

Screenshot of campaign for Karen Klein (Indiegogo.com)

Life hasn't always been kind to Karen Klein.

She was a widow at 51.

She lost her son, Rusty, to suicide 10 years ago.

She had to take out a loan against her paid-off home to make ends meet.

Health problems have limited her hearing and, sometimes, her ability to walk.

Then, last month, a video of the school bus monitor being badgered by four seventh-graders went viral. For 10 minutes, the foul-mouthed boys peppered her with insults about her weight, hearing aids, economic status and worse.

"You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they didn't want to be near you," one of the bullies said.

It's no wonder the 68-year-old still has a tough time accepting that thousands of good Samaritans are about to change her life forever.

"I didn't realize there were so many nice people out there in the world," Klein, who lives in upstate New York, told Yahoo News this week.

That's because a stranger's online campaign to fund a vacation for Klein also went viral. Instead of pledging the requested $5,000, donors have given nearly $700,000 to the drive, which ends at midnight Friday.

A half-million dollars was raised in the first four days, with pledges coming from 84 countries and every state in America.

"It doesn't seem like this is me that this is happening to," Klein said. "It's just unbelievable. I don't know when I'm going to come back to Earth."

The outpouring took place on Indiegogo.com, a website for online fundraising. The site combines Web payments and social media to enable anyone to raise money for anything.

"It's pretty remarkable," Indiegogo CEO Slava Rubin said of the bus monitor campaign.

The co-founder of the 5-year-old site attributed the campaign's success to the viral video, people fed up with bullies, and the technology to respond immediately. The boys had their bus privileges suspended and must attend an alternative school for one year.

"The world came together to act and say, 'Hey, this woman needs a vacation, and more importantly, this is our way of making a statement about bullying,'" he said.

More than 31,000 people have made pledges. The average donation was $21, but one person contributed $3,000.

"Are you kidding? For me? What did I do?" Klein told Yahoo News. "Why are these people going crazy like this for me?"

Klein will get the money, minus Indiegogo's 4 percent handling fee, next week.

"It's going to be an exciting day," Rubin said.

The amount raised is more than 40 times Klein's $15,506 annual salary as a bus monitor. She's been a bus driver and monitor in Greece, N.Y., for 23 years. Before that she worked as a banquet server and store clerk.

"Yeah, it's time to retire," said Klein, who reportedly will not have to pay taxes on the goodwill.

In retirement, she said she hopes to get involved in causes to prevent bullying and suicide. She'd also like to help special-needs children.

"I'm not a great speaker ... but I would like to try to do something," Klein said. "Kids write to me and tell me that they've been bullied. The kids that get bullied ... I hate it."

Strangers have written asking for money, but she knows she must pay her bills and take care of her family first. Two grandchildren are disabled and other family members are unemployed.

"Things have not been real good in the family," said Klein, who has three children and eight grandchildren. "It's going to go very fast. That's why I need to set some aside. And I don't feel like I'm going to be a different person because of the money. I'm just going to be me."

Besides money from the Indiegogo campaign, she's also received multiple trips and other gifts, including a blanket and pillow from USC's Davis School of Gerontology.

"That's the study of old people," Klein explained with a chuckle.

Cards and letters continue to arrive at her door daily.

"I kind of live in a little world of my own here," she said. "Opening up letter after letter after card after card of people saying how much they like me and what I did, it really boosts your morale."

And her spunk.

"Oh, I did make one big purchase," she said proudly. "A three-wheeled bike. It has a basket on the back, so I could even ride it to the store!"

Enjoy the ride, Karen Klein.

For Chimps, Tool Choice Is A Weighty Matter

A juvenile chimpanzee in the Ivory Coast?s Tai Forest watches as her mother carefully places a soft coula nut onto a hard, flat rock. In her other hand, mom has a chunk of hard wood. Mom smashes the nut with her makeshift hammer, once, twice, three times. Having broken the outer shell, she plucks out the edible bits, reaching for another nut and starting the process again. The juvenile wants a snack too. Even though she?s learned the basic process by watching the older chimpanzees in her troop, she?ll be at least six years old before she?s proficient enough at this sophisticated form of tool use to crack nuts open herself. Not that she?ll stop trying, in the meantime.

Nut-cracking has been observed in wild chimpanzees in Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. With only one exception, chimpanzee groups in Central and East Africa have never been seen cracking nuts, despite the fact that all the necessary ingredients ? nuts, stones, sticks, and roots ? are all found in abundance in those parts of the continent. Nut-cracking, it seems, requires more than just the available tools and basic know-how. Even within nut-cracking groups, some individuals will go their entire lives without ever successfully cracking open a nut.

The mystery behind the apparent complication involved in learning to crack nuts prompted one research group, led by Cornelia Schrauf of the University of Vienna, to try to figure out how chimpanzees select their nut-cracking tools.

Successful nut-cracking involves selecting an appropriate surface to serve as the anvil. It should be hard and relatively flat. It should also be able to keep the nut from rolling away. Then, the chimp needs to select the appropriate hammer. It needs to be the right shape and size. It needs to be light enough to easily manipulate, but heavy enough to smash the nut in as few strikes as possible. In the Tai Forest, chimps select hammers made of stone for the hard panda nuts, but opt instead for wooden hammers when it comes to the softer coula nuts. If they?ve only got rocks around, they?ll use heavier, harder stones for panda nuts and lighter ones for coula nuts.

Researchers weren?t sure, however, if chimpanzees were actually using weight as the primary consideration for hammer selection, since weight correlates with other features of hammers, such as size, material, shape, and density.

Schrauf and her colleagues assessed the means by which a group of captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) chose their hammers in three different experiments. In the first one, they provided the nuts and the anvil along with three different hammers of equal size and shape. Despite their equivalent dimensions, the cubic hammers weighed 300, 600, or 1200 grams. The second experiment was the same, except the hammers were spheres instead of cubes. The third experiment used spherical hammers as well, but the researchers used a wider weight discrepancy among them: 200, 800, and 1400 grams.

On the left, one of the chimps strikes a nut with a cubic hammer. On the right, a chimp attempts to crack a nut with a spherical tool.

In general, the chimps preferred the weightier hammers across all three experiments. Since all the hammers were visually identical, it was certain that they were choosing the heavier hammers only because of the weight. Further, the heavier the hammer, the fewer strikes were required to crack the nuts and the less time was needed to do so. Therefore, the researchers had effectively established that the chimpanzees at least implicitly understood the relationship between a hammer?s weight and its efficiency.

The results become more intriguing when each chimpanzee?s individual responses are considered. Loi, the alpha male of the group, was the most proficient nut cracker, outperforming the others from the beginning of the first experiment. He showed a clear preference for the heavier hammers, switching from a lighter to a heavier hammer more often than from heavy to light. Most of the other chimps showed little discrimination among the hammers at the beginning of the first experiment, but after the first few trials of the second experiment, they began to opt for the heavier tools. By the end of the final experiment, most chimpanzees? performance matched Loi?s. In fact, by the third experiment, the chimps were more likely to switch lighter hammers out for heavier ones before even trying to use them.

On the other hand, Natsuki, who was the only infant in the experiment, never improved her performance, despite an equivalent amount of experience as the other chimps. Even in the third experiment, where the heaviest hammer was seven times heavier than the lightest hammer, she still showed no preferences, selecting each of the three hammers the same number of times. She also never switched tools after being unable to crack open a nut. This, according to the researchers, is consistent with observations from the wild.

Together, these patterns demonstrate that experience is key to gaining expertise in nut-cracking, but experience alone isn?t enough. ?Maturational aspects also play an important role in determining tool selectivity and proficiency,? the researchers say. In other words, young chimpanzees need to do some growing up before they?ll be ready to successfully tackle adult-sized tasks.

Is there a lesson to be learned here for human primates?

Serious About Succeeding at Your Internet Business? Then What ...

It is totally normal to bring negative habits to the table when you are trying to make it with online marketing, but only those who recognize that and take action will tend to succeed.

If you wanted to really do something incredible for your business, then consider a JV because they can be awesome if all that right pieces are in place. Creating partnerships with other online entrepreneurs and Internet marketers will help you reach out to the masses, and bring you closer to success. This is not difficult to do or understand how to implement, but it does take a little courage to begin making the necessary connections. Get totally out of the mindset that this is something you cannot do because you can do it. When you get in the habit of meeting people and establishing something with them, then you can do a JV and keep moving on. Learning how to manage your time with daily business tasks would always be an excellent investment with potentially huge returns. If you are not making any money, then that is one thing; but if you are busy in your business then this can make a huge impact. It can be easy to get out of sync with things especially if you have a family and other important commitments. One great place to begin is by figuring out how you spend your time during your business days. Of course we do understand that not everybody will benefit as greatly from this as others ? it all depends on what your business is. It is simply a must-do principle that you execute your business responsibilities in the highest and most professional manner and that takes time.

Have you read that you need to take action in your online business and preferably every day? Extremely important reason you hear that over and over.

If you are afraid of doing the work, or doing what is necessary, then your mediocre or dismal results better not be a surprise to you. So there is nothing new in the fact that most people are lazy and do not want to work. All is laid out before you, but the curious thing is that people walk right over it without even seeing it. These are the things that will determine your business fate to a significant degree. If you feel your mindset is holding back your internet marketing success, then find out what is going on and then decide to change it. That is one powerful thing you can do that just about everybody else refuses to do.

Business Traveler Interview: Dr. Susan Biali - Road Warriorette

We all know we should take our vacation time. Studies have shown time and again that people who take vacations are happier, healthier, live longer, and are more satisfied with their lives. It?s just so hard to leave work at the office! But don?t worry?there are ways to maximize time on your business trips as well as vacations to gain the ultimate health benefits. Dr. Susan Biali, a health and happiness expert and author of Live a Life You Love: 7 Steps to a Healthier, Happier, More Passionate You, has teamed up with Embassy Suites to help travelers ?more-imize? their time, so they can get more out of the precious spare time they do have.

Here is Part One of my interview with Dr. Biali. Look for Part Two next week!

RW: When you travel for work a lot, sometimes it?s hard to get out of the business trip mindset?the go, go, go. What is your best advice for business travelers adding a few days to a work trip for vacation?how can they transition into the vacation mindset?

SB:? On a recent trip to New York I had some business related things to do, but I had vacation goals as well?some family in town to visit, sightseeing I wanted to do, etc. It?s very helpful to clearly delineate which days are vacation days vs. business days. There are a couple of ways to have more vacation days as a business traveler. You can either incorporate it, tag it on at the end of a business trip, or you can plan a separate vacation in which you clearly delineate it as vacation. Either way, it?s very important to unplug.

RW: Do you think it?s a good idea to combine business trips with a vacation component, or do you think it?s better to have separate trips?

SB: I am a big fan of grabbing rest and recovery any chance that you can. So for pure impact, if you can dedicate time absolutely to vacation it?s incredibly helpful, especially if you have a family. But when you travel a lot for business, finding even a couple of days really helps with the ?more-imization??grabbing a few days at the end of a work trip with your family to dedicate to vacation and fun is great. As a life coach, and as a person who?s very into the benefits of rest and relaxation, anytime you can fit it in your life it?s a good thing.

RW: One of your tips is to plan your vacation in advance. How far in advance do you think is important to be able to maximize those benefits?

SB: According to a study that came out of the Netherlands, it?s about eight weeks. Planning a vacation eight weeks in advance gives you a lot of time to look forward to it. It?s very interesting?they found that the most joy of a vacation actually came from the anticipation. I think we can all relate to that! If you know you have a vacation to look forward to, especially if you?re going with family members or other people, you talk about it, fantasize about it while you?re sitting at your desk?. It really has been proven to significantly improve the quality of life. Another interesting thing they found in that study was that people who had relaxing vacations?people who didn?t pack their vacation time with lots of activities or stress from running around?those people were the happiest once they got back. Their happiness lasted for a couple of weeks, as opposed to the people who didn?t really relax during vacation, where the effects wore off a lot more quickly.

RW: Interesting! So when you?re planning your vacation, do you have any tips for making the logistics of a vacation easy so that you can enjoy it as much as possible? Such as, when you arrive, how do you get to the hotel, etc?

SB:? If you can leave the night before, like after work, you can get to your destination and have a really full first day of vacation. In terms of getting to the hotel, I?ve found that vacation time is really precious to me. It?s generally worthwhile to take a cab or a car service from the airport, even if it?s going to cost more than a shuttle service. Because I?ve taken shuttle services, and oftentimes you end up sitting around the airport waiting forever for the next shuttle, then they?re taking you around to all the different terminals, then you go around to all the different hotels as they drop other people off. I?ve found that as much as it feels like a good idea to save a whole bunch of money, vacation time is so precious! Plus, your stress level rises when you?re sitting around waiting for a bunch of people. I just recently had this experience when I was in New York?and I?m still stressed out just thinking about it! Does that make sense?

RW: Yes! I?ve never actually thought about it, but it is so true! Whenever I?ve used any of the shuttle services I?ve always felt that I?m just wasting my precious time. Sure it cost $20 vs. $50 but, ugh, it took two and a half hours.

SB: Yes! And then you?re stressed, you?re irritated, you?re hungry. I?ve just generally found that it?s not the way to go. Also, wherever I stay, I try to make sure that there are as few things to worry about as possible. For example, I know that Embassy Suites and other hotels have hot cooked to order breakfast. So anytime there are freebies like that, I?ve found it really helpful because I don?t have to worry about where I?m going to find food or if room service is too expensive. I can get my day off to a faster start as opposed to looking around for somewhere to eat for breakfast?its? a huge help, logistically.

RW: I so agree with everything you just said! Can you expand on your experiences and recommendations of traveling in the night before vs. the day of? We?ve certainly done both, and we?ve found that if you stay up really late getting things ready, then get up really early to fly somewhere, you end up napping for hours once you arrive, and your whole first day is kind of shot!

SB: Yes, yes, absolutely yes. I totally agree. Generally I don?t like to arrive too late, but if you arrive in the evening or at a decent hour of the night, you have time to organize yourself. You get to the hotel, check in, get unpacked, maybe get a bite to eat?and then you?re set. When you wake up the next day, it?s just so delicious. You can sleep in, and you only have to worry about getting up early enough for breakfast! Also, I always try to schedule a transition day when I get back home. That takes some of the dread out of going home, and the vacation carries over.

RW: That?s a great idea! We?ve found that if we travel out on a Saturday and come home on a Saturday, having that Sunday to catch up on laundry, email, etc, is so helpful.

SB: Exactly. You can even travel out on Friday night and comeback on Saturday?that?s even better!

Stay tuned for Part Two of my interview with Dr. Susan Biali, coming next week. We will be talking about her recommendations about the types of vacations that are the most relaxing, and therefore most beneficial for our health!
