If you or your family are considering purchasing a ?big ticket? item, I have a few tried and true tips for you. ?In this economy, it is always worth trying to get a discount. ?I am not guaranteeing any or all of these tips will work for you, and the success of bargaining is very dependent on the situation. ?These tips and techniques can be used for so many things. ?Here are some ideas of some products and services you may want to try getting a discount on:
OK, here we go!
1. ?Get your learn on! ?
Being an educated consumer is so important when you are considering value versus cost. ?Research online for product and service information before you even begin browsing. ?You will have an idea of a general price point for the product and know what you should typically be getting for your money.
2. ?Listen to your mother?or your neighbor, or your coworker.
Ask around for product reviews or referrals. ?People who have experience purchasing or using what you are looking for may be able to steer you in the right direction. ?Reading online reviews can also be very helpful!
3. ?Walk away.
It?s time to begin shopping for said product or service. ?However, do not buy the first time you enter the building or converse with a representative from a company. ?When I?m shopping for an item that has a negotiable price, I come in the door knowing my price point. ?When a sales associate approaches me, I simply state that it appears that their product or service is out of my price point, and I begin to leave. ?Many times, the associate will stop you and ask the magic question, ?Wait, what?are you looking to spend today.?
4. ?Watch it go down.
Open with a low price, lower than you know is even reasonable. ?This way, you have space to negotiate back and forth. ?Use the information you?ve gathered about similar products or services to drive that price down! ?Inform them that you know of a competitor offering a lower price or an incentive. ?Don?t be shy to drive a hard bargain, it?s worth it.
5. ?Drop a stack.
Pay in cash. ?Never pull out plastic or a checkbook in a situation where you are trying to negotiate price. ?This indicates your budget has flexibility. ?WRONG! ?Your budget is as flexible as a Real Housewife?s face. ?Once you?ve negotiated a price that you are happy with, ask for a cash discount. ?This is applicable in SO many situations, including hospital bills and insurance premiums. ?You can expect anywhere from a 1%-5% discount.
